Email sabrina.penty@mailonline.co.uk\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-1526\/sabrina-penty.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SABRINA PENTY<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  09:49 EDT, 23 July 2025   |  Updated:  10:41 EDT, 23 July 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A powerful 5.3 magnitude <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/earthquakes\/index.html\" id=\"mol-c771a060-67cb-11f0-841b-379ec2e60350\" rel=\"noopener\">earthquake<\/a>\u00a0rocked a Greek holiday hotspot today, with tourists left fearing for their lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The huge quake took place at 4.26 pm local time on Wednesday, with the epicentre around 13 miles off the coast of\u00a0Antikythera, <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/greece\/index.html\" id=\"mol-c8dc7e30-67cf-11f0-841b-379ec2e60350\" rel=\"noopener\">Greece<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0Geodynamic Institute said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The tremble, which had a focal depth of 36 miles, was reportedly felt in some parts of the Greek holiday island of Crete, which is popular among British tourists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">No casualties have been reported, but locals described how terrified tourists &#8216;jumped out of their sun loungers and asked if this was normal and if there was a fear of a tsunami&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Others described how the tremor made items in their homes move and how they heard loud banging sounds as buildings swayed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">One local said that &#8216;it felt like the whole building moved slightly&#8217;, while another described how they &#8216;heard a rumble&#8217; as the &#8216;house shook.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to Earthquakes.Gr, a\u00a0\u00a02.6 magnitude quake was detected at around 5.30am this morning, followed by a 2.2 magnitude tremor at 6.40am.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The epicentre of all these tremors were located between Antikythera and Crete.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-7d829c9e6328f193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/100560301-14932985-image-a-9_1753279234677.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\" alt=\"A powerful 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Greece today between the islands of Crete (pictured) and\u00a0Antikythera\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">A powerful 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Greece today between the islands of Crete (pictured) and\u00a0Antikythera<\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Greek island of\u00a0\u00a0Antikythera lies just south of the Peloponnese peninsula and northwest of Crete and is a growing tourist destination thanks to its ancient Greek ruins and stunning beaches.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Crete, meanwhile, is Greece&#8217;s largest and one of its most famous islands, drawing in millions of holidaymakers every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The earthquake off the coast of Greece comes a month after hundreds of firefighters battled raging wildfires off the island of Chios.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Towering walls of flames tore through forest and agricultural land on the island, where authoritieS sent firefighting reinforcements from Athens,\u00a0\u00a0the northern city of Thessaloniki and the nearby island of Lesbos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Apocalyptic scenes captured in images and videos showed firefighters battling the flames as the wildfires raged on, while thick plumes of black smoke filled the sky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Other footage showed helicopters spraying water over smoke-filled fields.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It also comes just five days after a powerful earthquake hit the Italian city of Naples and its surrounding region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Local residents reported hearing a &#8216;roar&#8217; and feeling a &#8216;strong tremor&#8217; as the 4.6 magnitude quake struck at around 9.15 am last Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The epicentre of the earthquake was just off the coast of the highly active Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic caldera west of the city, at a depth of 1.5 miles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Multiple people living nearby in the seaside town of Bagnoli said it &#8216;seemed like a bomb&#8217; had gone off when the quake hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It measured the same magnitude as an earthquake recorded in the region on March 13, the strongest to hit the region in 40 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;We rocked a lot&#8230;
