I didn\u2019t know it at the time, but I was in the throes of postpartum depression \u2013 constantly feeling sad, lonely, and anxious. I expected the feelings to eventually pass, but when I had my second child two years later, my depression and anxiety only got worse, and I didn\u2019t feel like myself mentally.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Then, over the next several years, I was diagnosed with a series of physical health conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/pcos\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/pcos\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"PCOS\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">PCOS<\/a>), osteopenia, sciatica, and vertigo, as well as a herniated disk and shoulder impingement from years of poor posture, a sedentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64473094\/10k-steps-desk-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a64473094\/10k-steps-desk-job\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"desk job\" data-node-id=\"3.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">desk job<\/a>, and very little physical activity. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">I was fragile in every sense: physically in pain, mentally drained, and emotionally disconnected from myself and my family. I felt trapped in my body and was at an all-time low, experiencing negative self-talk and even suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fit-at-any-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fit-at-any-age\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><img alt=\"call to action for fat loss information\" title=\"fit at any age\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4267\" height=\"633\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/wh-fitness-fat-loss-banner-6880b7f16f1af.png\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/a><strong data-node-id=\"9.0\">It wasn\u2019t until a month before my 40th birthday that everything changed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"it-wasnt-until-a-month-before-my-40th-birthday-that-everything-changedi-was-inspired-to-start-working-out-by-an-online-transformation-challenge\" data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"body-text css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">In 2021, I randomly came across a 12-week transformation challenge run by the online fitness platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fittr.com\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.fittr.com\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"FITTR\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">FITTR<\/a>. The goal was to achieve noticeable body recomposition\u2014whether that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/fat-loss\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fat loss\" data-node-id=\"10.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">fat loss<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706692\/how-to-build-muscle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706692\/how-to-build-muscle\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"muscle gain\" data-node-id=\"10.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">muscle gain<\/a>, or both\u2014and submit before and after progress photos each week. I was so inspired by the incredible stories of past participants, I realised that if they could do it, so could I. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">The challenge didn\u2019t include a structured program, but it strongly encouraged sustainable weight training and balanced nutrition, so I signed up, hired a coach, and committed to working hard. There were 44,000 participants worldwide and my goal was to be in the top 250. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">I had never lifted weights, but with the help of my coach, I began <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706202\/strength-training-for-beginners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a706202\/strength-training-for-beginners\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"strength training\" data-node-id=\"12.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">strength training<\/a> five to six days a week. At first, I had to modify exercises to tailor to my different injuries, but after six weeks of building strength and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a708496\/mobility\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a708496\/mobility\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mobility,\" data-node-id=\"12.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">mobility,<\/a> much of my chronic pain subsided and I felt stronger, happier, and more energetic. I was officially hooked. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">I also evaluated my nutrition and ended up overhauling my diet. I always thought I ate relatively healthily since I rarely consumed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a708590\/ultra-processed-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/a708590\/ultra-processed-foods\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"ultra-processed food\" data-node-id=\"14.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">ultra-processed food<\/a>, but then I realised I ate mostly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g46972653\/complex-carbs-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/g46972653\/complex-carbs-list\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"carbs\" data-node-id=\"14.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">carbs<\/a> and little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/weight-loss\/a705712\/best-protein-powders-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/weight-loss\/a705712\/best-protein-powders-women\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"protein\" data-node-id=\"14.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a>. So, thanks to my coach, I learned to count and balance macros at every meal and prioritise protein for muscle growth and satiety. There\u2019s a lot of noise around diet culture, but I kept things simple by focusing on fresh, whole, unprocessed foods. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Throughout the 12-week challenge, I was so focused on and excited about my goals and progress, I didn\u2019t have time to dwell on negative self-talk. It paid off: I placed in the top 50 of participants. I gained a new sense of confidence and was so empowered that I could push myself to new limits. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"17.0\">Now, my workouts are a combination of strength training and calisthenics to build coordination and stability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"18\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">At 44, I lift heavy weights three days a week, and recently added two days of calisthenic workouts to improve my coordination, flexibility, and body awareness. I do a push\/pull\/legs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a37630210\/workout-split\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a37630210\/workout-split\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"workout split\" data-node-id=\"18.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">workout split<\/a> for heavy lifting days, and my calisthenics training includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/g44444509\/bodyweight-workout\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/workouts\/g44444509\/bodyweight-workout\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodyweight\" data-node-id=\"18.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">bodyweight<\/a> exercises like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a45665907\/pull-up-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a45665907\/pull-up-challenge\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pull-ups\" data-node-id=\"18.5\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">pull-ups<\/a>, push-ups, pistol squats, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a45894272\/handstand-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/a45894272\/handstand-challenge\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"handstands\" data-node-id=\"18.7\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">handstands<\/a>. My workouts are usually an hour and a half long: I typically do five to six moves per session, with three to four sets of 12 to 14 reps, depending on the exercise and weight. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/upper-body-workouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/upper-body-workouts\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Upper body\" data-node-id=\"19.0\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">Upper body<\/a> is my favourite muscle group to train, and I love my pull day workouts. At the start of my strength journey, one pull-up felt impossible, but now, I can do seven. As part of my calisthenics training, I\u2019m currently working on mastering a muscle-up, but my ultimate upper body goal is to hold a handstand.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"21\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">On top of resistance training, I aim for 10,000 steps a day and prioritise mobility and flexibility. Given my history of sciatica, I also stretch before and after every workout and regularly practice yoga as a form of active recovery on my off days. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">When it comes to my diet, I aim to eat at least 100 grams of protein per day, so my fridge is always stocked with marinated fish and chicken (I don\u2019t eat red meat). I also incorporate a variety of fresh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/a64528970\/how-to-naturally-reduce-inflammation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/a64528970\/how-to-naturally-reduce-inflammation\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"anti-inflammatory\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-inflammatory<\/a> foods such as colourful fruits and dark leafy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/g62053293\/healthiest-vegetables\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/food\/healthy-eating\/g62053293\/healthiest-vegetables\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"vegetables\" data-node-id=\"22.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">vegetables<\/a>. When my meals are nourishing, I have more energy and feel better physically and mentally. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">Initially, I closely counted macros to ensure I was hitting my nutritional goals, but now I eat intuitively since I understand generally how many macros there are in my meals. I also meal prep every week to eliminate guesswork during mealtime and properly fuel my gains in the gym. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"24.0\">I was successful in my strength transformation because of these 3 factors<\/strong><strong data-node-id=\"25.0\">1. I leaned on exercise as a source of peace<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"26\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">I used to carry a lot of shame around my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/mental-health\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"mental health\" data-node-id=\"27.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">mental health<\/a> struggles, but instead of silently suffering, I now lean on exercise to help keep my anxiety and depression at bay. For me, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/strength-training\/a705924\/best-gyms-in-london\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"gym\" data-node-id=\"27.3\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">gym<\/a> isn\u2019t just a place to train \u2013 it\u2019s a space to breathe and recenter because every rep helps silence the noise in my head. I\u2019ve accepted that anxiety will always be a part of my life, and that\u2019s okay, but I no longer let it control me. Whether it\u2019s going for a walk, practicing a new calisthenics skill, or crushing an intense workout, I\u2019ve learned that movement is the best medicine for mental clarity. <\/p>\n<p><strong data-node-id=\"29.0\">2. I let go of self-doubt and learned to embrace confidence<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"30\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"31\" class=\"css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">After years of dissociating from my body because of my health issues, the start of my journey was full of self-doubt. But once I realised that I\u2019m the only one who can make judgments on how I feel, I unlocked a new sense of confidence. Instead of operating on a fear factor and worrying about judgement for what I can\u2019t do, I learned to embrace what I can. Believing in myself and my capabilities has truly fueled my transformation. <\/p>\n<p>3. <strong data-node-id=\"33.1\">I viewed fitness and balanced nutrition as a long-term lifestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol data-node-id=\"34\" class=\"css-1wk73g0 emevuu60\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"35\" class=\"body-text css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">My commitment to weight training and nutrition has allowed me to rebuild what years of neglect, stress, and injury took away\u2014it gave me a deep sense of ownership over my body while protecting my bones and supporting my hormonal health. This journey taught me that I\u2019m worthy of self-love, and watching my body transformation allowed my mind to transform with it. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"36\" class=\"body-text css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">What started as a 12-week body recomposition challenge quickly became my lifestyle\u2014as well as my career. After going through my own transformation, I trained to become a qualified nutritionist and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/fitness\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"fitness\" data-node-id=\"36.1\" class=\"body-link css-7bauu1 emevuu60\" rel=\"noopener\">fitness<\/a> coach. It\u2019s been so meaningful to help other women, especially over 40, reconnect with their strength, confidence, and sense of self.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"37\" class=\"body-text css-16gxnpx emevuu60\">It\u2019s been four years since my initial transformation, but strength training has truly given me back a life I thought I\u2019d lost, and I have no intention of stopping.
