If you\u2019ve been spending money on the PS Store<\/strong><\/a> for over a decade, then you\u2019ll probably remember it was once possible to purchase avatars on the PS3.<\/p>\n

While this feature eventually got replaced by the ability to make your profile picture whatever you want, legacy support for the classic PSN avatars does still exist, and occasionally Sony will release redemption codes for some free ones. (Ghost of Tsushima\u2019s<\/a> anniversary is a recent example<\/a> of that.)<\/p>\n

However, we spotted a few isolated examples<\/a> of fans complaining that their old PS3 avatars have gone missing, so we decided to take a look for ourselves. And it\u2019s true!<\/p>\n

We bought a handful of avatars on the PS3 back in the day, including one for Kung-Fu Rider<\/a> (remember that?!) and PAIN<\/a>. We can\u2019t find any of these in the Premium Avatars category on our PS5.<\/p>\n

We still have plenty of avatars to choose from, and we weren\u2019t planning to swap out our Demon Slayer<\/a> one anyway, but it\u2019s interesting to see these ancient profile pictures nixed.<\/p>\n

It seems if you\u2019re still using a purchased PS3 avatar, then it\u2019ll work. But don\u2019t change it to anything else, because there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll lose access to it later.<\/p>\n

Our guess is that this likely isn\u2019t malicious, and it\u2019s probably just a symptom of the PS3\u2019s increasingly creaky architecture. Either way, we\u2019re not going to complain too heavily about the loss of a JPG we bought over 15 years ago for pennies.<\/p>\n

We have seen some people say they\u2019re still seeing their purchased PS3 avatars, so your mileage may vary. It looks like we\u2019ve (temporarily?) lost access to ours, though.<\/p>\n
