\n\tRosamund Pike<\/a> gives a scorching central performance in the world premiere\u00a0of\u00a0Inter Alia<\/a> at the National Theatre, playwright Suzie Miller\u2019s follow-up to\u00a0Prima Facie, which won Tony and Olivier Award glory for Jodie Comer. Now, there\u2019s a race to lure the\u00a0Saltburn\u00a0star into the West End.<\/p>\n

\n\tPike (Gone Girl, An Education) gives off heat as Jessica Parks, a fictional crown court judge who becomes embroiled in a potent issue of masculinity and motherhood that threatens both her family and professional life. The first night crowd in the National\u2019s Lyttelton Theatre roared their approval when the actress took her solo bow, having dominated the stage for the duration of the 100-minute play directed by Justin Martin, who also directed Prima Facie in London<\/a> and on Broadway.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso involved are the judge\u2019s husband and son, played by Jamie Glover (The Crown) and Jasper Talbot, a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.<\/p>\n

\n\tSeveral West End commercial theater owners were at Wednesday\u2019s opening in the hope of transferring the show\u2014with Pike\u2014into one of their venues.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople are going to be clamouring for tickets to see Rosamund in this,\u201d Nica Burns, chief executive and owner of Nimax Theatres with Max Weitzenhoffer, tells us at the show\u2019s after-party held in the Lyttelton\u2019s two vast foyers.<\/p>\n

\n\tBehind the scenes, the National is keen to transfer\u00a0Inter Alia\u00a0if enough of the reviews from critics are positive.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd, more importantly, if Pike\u2019s available. Her tour-de-force performance is the box-office attraction, as was Comer\u2019s\u00a0in\u00a0Prima Facie.<\/p>\n

\n\tWord from Pike\u2019s camp is: Roz wants to do it, but let\u2019s wait and see how it all unfurls.<\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s also the question of finding a playhouse that can fit in Miriam Buether\u2019s set, which has been designed for the Lyttelton\u2019s wide proscenium. But, as one producer pointed out: \u201cIt\u2019ll cost them, but the set can be scaled down. That\u2019s not a major problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019m loathe to give away any plot detail, although I will say that there are three moments when the gasps from the audience were the loudest I\u2019ve heard in years.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, to give you a little idea, Miller writes in the official programme that \u201cthere are so many invisible lines and boundaries that women must negotiate between motherhood, marriage, professional lives and being women in society\u2026 For women, generally there is another layer, the social judgement of women trying to manage it all. Jessica\u2019s character is a \u2018judge\u2019 but so too is the character of Jessica being judged: for her parenting, her choices, her work hours, her femininity, her feminism, her role as a life partner and more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dramatist continues: \u201cLike so many women trying to meet so many competing demand, Jessica also judges herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMiller\u2019s words don\u2019t give the central plot away. In fact, I pray critics are careful with spoilers. The play runs at the National until Sept. 13.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn September 4, a performance of\u00a0Inter Alia\u00a0will be captured live from the Lyttelton and broadcast to cinemas across the UK and Ireland. Further screenings will be held in the UK and Ireland from Sept. 18 and internationally, including the U.S., from Sept. 25.<\/p>\n
