{"id":287264,"date":"2025-07-24T06:52:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T06:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/287264\/"},"modified":"2025-07-24T06:52:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T06:52:09","slug":"australia-lifts-us-beef-restrictions-slammed-by-trump-international-trade-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/287264\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia lifts US beef restrictions slammed by Trump | International Trade News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Canberra says restrictions will be lifted following a \u2018rigorous science and risk-based assessment\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Australia has announced that it will lift tough restrictions on beef imports from the United States, removing measures singled out for criticism by US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Minister Julie Collins said the government would remove the biosecurity restrictions after a \u201crigorous science and risk-based assessment\u201d found risks of disease were being managed on the US side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia stands for open and fair trade \u2013 our cattle industry has significantly benefitted from this,\u201d Collins said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Australia, which has some of the world\u2019s toughest biosecurity measures, has until now not accepted beef from cattle raised in Canada and Mexico but slaughtered in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Canberra lifted\u00a0a ban on beef from cows raised and slaughtered in the US, introduced in response to an outbreak of mad cow disease,\u00a0in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after Trump called out Australia\u2019s restrictions on US beef in his April 2 \u201cLiberation Day\u201d announcement of sweeping tariffs on dozens of countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia bans \u2013 and they\u2019re wonderful people and wonderful everything \u2013 but they ban American beef,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t take any of our beef,\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t want it because they don\u2019t want it to affect their farmers and you know, I don\u2019t blame them but we\u2019re doing the same thing right now starting at midnight tonight, I would say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australia, which exports about 70 percent of its beef, is among the main suppliers of red meat to the US, but consumes little US beef.<\/p>\n<p>Australia, which has been subject to Trump\u2019s baseline 10 percent tariff since April, exported about 26,000 tonnes of beef and veal to the US in the first three weeks of July, according to government statistics.<\/p>\n<p>Meat &amp; Livestock Australia, a producer-owned company that supports the local beef industry, said the changes would have a minimal effect on the market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential for US beef to be imported into Australia in large volumes is minimal, given the high demand for beef in the US, the low US cattle herd, the strength of the Australian dollar, our competitive domestic supply, and most importantly Australians\u2019 strong preference for high-quality, tasty and nutritious Australian beef,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, demand for Australian beef in the US continues to grow.
