Man United have been linked with a summer move for former Newcastle striker Callum Wilson but may now have to act quickly amid reports that West Ham have opened talks to sign him<\/p>\n

West Ham United have reportedly opened talks with Manchester United<\/a>-linked Callum Wilson this summer.<\/p>\n

The former Newcastle United<\/a> striker left Eddie Howe’s side on a free transfer in June. The Reds have been focusing on bolstering their attack this summer and are looking to sign a new No.9.<\/p>\n

United will need to sell to buy after spending big on Matheus Cunha<\/a> and Bryan Mbeumo in the current transfer window. One option reportedly being considered is looking at free agents, with ex-Leicester City star Jamie Vardy, former Everton frontman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Wilson all being linked with short-term moves to Old Trafford<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But any hopes of signing Wilson will need to see United accelerate their efforts after BBC Sport<\/a> reported on Thursday that the Hammers are interested in a deal. It is also claimed that the 33-year-old has attracted interest from Premier League<\/a> clubs and also has options in Major League Soccer (MLS).<\/p>\n

Newcastle spent around \u00a320million to sign Wilson from Bournemouth in 2020. He spent an injury-hit five years at St James’ Park.but went on to score 49 goals in 130 appearances for the Magpies.<\/p>\n

Talking about Wilson’s presence at Newcastle, Magpies boss Eddie Howe has said: “What I can say is that Callum Wilson is, and has been, an incredible footballer for Newcastle. He\u2019s someone who epitomises the spirit that has got us to where we are.<\/p>\n

“He\u2019s professional, brave \u2013 to come here and be the number nine in the manner and the moment he did, it was a difficult moment in the club\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

“The club needed hope \u2013 and Callum gave them hope. He dealt with the pressure and responsibility that role brings unbelievably well.”<\/p>\n

United have so far been frustrated in their pursuit of a new striker this summer. The Reds missed out on a move for Liam Delap, who swapped Ipswich Town for Chelsea<\/a>, and have been linked with Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, who look set to join Arsenal and Galatasaray, respectively.<\/p>\n
