A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after she suffered a medical episode behind the wheel of a car and crashed into a tree.<\/p>\n

It happened on the A4040 Harborne Lane<\/a>, near Chapel Lane junction in Selly Oak, shortly after 1pm this afternoon, July 24.<\/p>\n

Hero locals rushed to the woman’s aid and began giving her CPR before paramedics arrived.<\/p>\n

She was later rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital<\/a> in a critical condition.<\/p>\n

Harborne Lane was shut for around two hours following the crash but has since reopened.<\/p>\n

A West Midlands Ambulance Service<\/a> spokeswoman told BirminghamLive: “We were called to reports of an RTC on Chapel Lane in Selly Oak<\/a> at 1.08pm.<\/p>\n

“Two ambulances, a MERIT trauma doctor with critical care paramedic, and a second critical care paramedic were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews found one car had come off the road and collided with a tree.<\/p>\n

“The driver, a woman, was in a critical condition after a suspected medical episode at the wheel and was receiving good CPR from bystanders.<\/p>\n

“Ambulance staff immediately took over to administer advanced life support before conveying her to Queen Elizabeth Hospital<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

West Midlands Fire Service said it was called called to the scene at around 1.14pm.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “We were called to Harborne<\/a> Lane and sent two fire engines to the scene.<\/p>\n

“We found a lady had suffered a cardiac arrest while driving.<\/p>\n

“She was involved in a minor collision with a tree.<\/p>\n
