The deal, finalised after three years of negotiations, aims to boost annual bilateral trade by around \u00a325.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement was signed by India\u2019s commerce minister Piyush Goyal and the UK\u2019s secretary of state for business and trade Jonathan Reynolds following formal talks between Modi and prime minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, northwest of London. <\/p>\n<p>Modi arrived in London at around 8.30 pm on Wednesday and is scheduled to leave later on Thursday, spending less than 24 hours in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.easterneye.biz\/india-uk-free-trade-agreement-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALSO READ: Explainer: What UK-India FTA means for both countries<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the signing, Modi was expected to have lunch with Starmer and meet King Charles at Sandringham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"e6b46\" data-rm-shortcode-id=\"9a590d81df1ffd146e6188f1e788c2ec\" data-rm-shortcode-name=\"rebelmouse-image\" class=\"rm-shortcode rm-lazyloadable-image \" lazy-loadable=\"true\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns='http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg'%20viewBox='0%200%201600%201200'%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" data-runner-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/india-uk-free-trade-agreement.jpg\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" alt=\"India UK Free Trade Agreement\"\/>\u00a0getty images<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deal details and economic impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The agreement will reduce tariffs on a wide range of goods and services. India will lower tariffs on nearly 90 per cent of UK goods. Scotch whisky tariffs will fall from 150 per cent to 75 per cent immediately and reduce to 40 per cent over the next decade. Tariffs on cars will drop from over 100 per cent to 10 per cent under a quota system. The UK will also cut tariffs on cosmetics, medical devices, salmon, chocolates, biscuits, clothes, footwear, and food products such as frozen prawns.<\/p>\n<p>The UK will offer duty-free access to 99 per cent of Indian goods. Indian exports including textiles, footwear, gems and jewellery, auto components, chemicals, furniture and machinery will benefit. Average tariffs UK firms face in India will fall to 3 per cent from 15 per cent.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.easterneye.biz\/starmer-modi-uk-india-relations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALSO READ: Starmer and Modi strengthen UK-India relations at Chequers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the UK government, the agreement is expected to increase UK GDP by \u00a34.8 billion annually in the long term. The UK and India are the sixth and fifth largest global economies, respectively, with current bilateral trade worth around \u00a341 billion. The deal is the UK\u2019s most economically significant bilateral trade agreement since leaving the European Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"shortcode-media shortcode-media-youtube\">\u00a0\u00a0&#8211; YouTube\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oMxQZ577cMs&amp;t=10s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.youtube.com<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Statements from leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Standing alongside Modi, Starmer said, \u201cThis is not the extent or the limit of our collaboration with India.
