Merseyside Police are appealing for information after a woman was hit by a car<\/a> and suffered serious injuries on a major city centre<\/a> road. Emergency services were called to the junction of Chapel Street and Georges Dock Gate, which leads onto The Strand, at 12.35pm where it was reported a gold-coloured Toyota Avensis had collided with a woman in her 70s.<\/p>\n When the ECHO<\/a> arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, the woman was receiving treatment on the pedestrian crossing at the junction, which is located opposite the Crowne Plaza Hotel.<\/a><\/p>\n The top of Chapel Street was closed to vehicles, down to one lane heading south towards the Baltic Triangle\/Dingle and three lanes heading north towards Leeds Street and Scotland Road. The road crossing was also blocked to people on foot. At its height, there were several police cars at the scene, along with an ambulance and a fire engine.<\/p>\n At 4pm, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police<\/a> said the woman had sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition was described as serious but not life-threatening.<\/p>\n A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said the woman was \u201cconscious and breathing\u201d when its crews arrived at the scene.<\/p>\n The police said the Toyota and the driver of the vehicle were located a short distance away, and the driver was assisting police with enquiries.<\/p>\n Officers could be seen entering and exiting the nearby Crowne Plaza hotel, with officers speaking to members of staff. They could also be seen inspecting the Toyota in the car park and using measuring tape.<\/p>\n Two guests staying at the hotel said car was parked up in a different position earlier before being moved by the police.<\/p>\n A man walking past the car park told the ECHO: \u201cI just saw the police using it. They were speaking to someone outside the hotel just now. Fingers crossed the woman\u2019s okay. This road is mad at the best of times.\u201d<\/p>\n The area is busy with many office workers and tourists. Upon seeing the woman receiving treatment, another woman who did not wish to be named said: \u201cThat\u2019s so sad.
