The Labour Government announced earlier this year that the Personal Allowance will remain frozen at \u00a312,570 until April 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Petition creator Rosemary Grey argues that raising the income threshold would \u201csupport our older citizens, many of whom have already contributed by paying<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/state-pension-age-retirement-tax-35487933\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" taxLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> tax<\/a> during their working life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The e-petition has been posted on the UK Government&#8217;s Petitions Parliament website. The current official age of retirement is 66 and set to rise to 67 between 2027 and 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/hmrc\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HM Revenue and CustomsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HM Revenue and Customs<\/a> (HMRC) data indicates that 8.7m pensioners are projected to pay income tax on their retirement income in 2025\/26. It marks an increase of around 420,000 compared to the previous year (2024\/25) and a rise of 1.85m from 10 years ago (2015\/16).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The full annual <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"New State PensionLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">New State Pension<\/a> reached \u00a311,973 in 2025\/26, tipping hundreds of thousands more pensioners into paying income tax.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UK Government has also confirmed it will honour the Triple Lock policy during this parliamentary term. However, this could see everyone on the full, New State Pension pushed over the tax threshold in just two years\u2019 time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">David Brooks, head of policy at leading independent consultancy Broadstone, said: \u201cWe would expect a growing number of pensioners to be liable for income tax as the country\u2019s demographic changes due to our ageing population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFiscal drag, however, is also bringing hundreds of thousands more pensioners into paying Income Tax bracket every year as the frozen Personal Allowance thresholds combines with the Triple Lock-protected State Pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWhile perhaps personally frustrating for many pensioners, it reflects the nature of inflation linked occupational pensions and a Triple-locked State Pension that continues to rise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He added: \u201cThe government will be called on again to protect pensioners from this impact but with seemingly few ways to control the rise in pensioner incomes, taxation is the only tool left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe should also expect the income tax from pensioners to rise in coming years as more income will be taken from pensions. Taking pension income is the key way to protect pension benefits from the impact of the Inheritance Tax Rules on unspent pension funds due to come in from April 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Under the Triple Lock policy, the New and Basic State Pensions increase each year in-line with whichever is the highest between the average annual earnings growth from May to July, CPI in the year to September, or 2.5 per cent. It is aimed at preventing the value of the State Pensions being whittled away by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/new-state-pension-payments-tax-34705899\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"cost of livingLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">cost of living<\/a> pressures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The New and Basic State Pensions increased by 4.1 per cent in April, however, future forecasts from the Labour Government expect it to rise by 2.5 per cent over the next four financial years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Using these calculations, it puts the full New State Pension on track to be worth \u00a312,578.80 in the 2027\/28 financial year &#8211; \u00a378.80 over the Personal Allowance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">While the amount of State Pension to be taxed may seem relatively small &#8211; tax is only paid on the amount over the Personal Allowance &#8211; older people with other income streams could find themselves having to part with more cash to pay a tax bill &#8211; if it\u2019s not automatically deducted from private or workplace pensions through PAYE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Online guidance at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.service.gov.uk\/guidance\/check-if-you-need-to-pay-tax-on-your-pension\/start\/what-type-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GOV.UK Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">GOV.UK <\/a>on who might need to pay tax on their pension also includes a handy tool to calculate how much tax someone might need to pay, and the different ways this can be done.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The latest State Pension Triple Lock predictions show the following projected annual increases:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2025\/26<\/strong> &#8211; 4.1%, the forecast was 4%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2026\/27<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2027\/28<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2028\/29<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2029\/30<\/strong> &#8211; 2.5%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>State Pension payments 2025\/26<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Full New State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Weekly payment: \u00a3230.25<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Four-weekly payment: \u00a3921<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Annual amount: \u00a311,973<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Full Basic State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Weekly payment: \u00a3176.45<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Four-weekly payment: \u00a3705.80<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Annual amount: \u00a39,175<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Future new State Pension forecasts<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Under a 2.5 per cent increase, the full New State Pension will be worth:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2026\/27<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a3236 per week, \u00a312,227.30 a year<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">2027\/28<\/strong> &#8211; \u00a3241.90 per week, \u00a312,578.80 a year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What is taxed<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Guidance on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tax-on-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GOV.UKLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">GOV.UK<\/a> states: \u201cYou pay tax if your total annual income adds up to more than your Personal Allowance.
