This payment is available for those who have reached the UK Government\u2019s eligible retirement age, which is currently 66 for both men and women, and have paid at least 10 years&#8217; worth of National Insurance Contributions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, people approaching the official age of retirement this year may not be aware that the State Pension is regarded as a contributory benefit and is not paid automatically by the DWP. You should get a letter no later than two months before you reach State Pension age, telling you what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It then clarifies you can either claim your State Pension or <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/deferring-state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"delay (defer) claiming itLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">delay (defer) claiming it<\/a>. It states: \u201cIf you want to defer, you do not have to do anything. Your pension will automatically be deferred until you claim it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Which means, unless you respond to the letter confirming you want to start <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/state-pension-triple-lock-labour-33175068\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"claiming State PensionLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">claiming State Pension<\/a>, you will not receive any payments as the DWP will interpret no response as a wish to defer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Deferring your State Pension could increase the payments you get each week when you decide to claim it, as long as you defer for at least nine weeks. Your State Pension increases by the equivalent of 1% for every nine weeks you defer, this works out as just under 5.8% for every 52 weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The extra amount is paid with your regular State Pension payment, however, it\u2019s important to be aware any extra payments you get from deferring could be taxed &#8211; find out more on GOV.UK <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/tax-on-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">it&#8217;s also important to be aware deferred State Pensions increase each year in line with the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate and not the highest measure of the Triple Lock policy.<\/p>\n<p>State Pension payments<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Full New State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Weekly payment: \u00a3230.25<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Four-weekly payment: \u00a3921<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Annual amount: \u00a311,973<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Full Basic State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Weekly payment: \u00a3176.45<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Four-weekly payment: \u00a3705.80<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Annual amount: \u00a39,175<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your first payment<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Your first payment will be within five weeks of reaching State Pension age and you will get a full payment every four weeks after that. You might get part of a payment before your first full payment. (Image: Getty )DWP \u2018starting amount\u2019 for the new State Pension<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you have qualifying years on your National Insurance record as at April 5, 2016, DWP works out a \u2018starting amount\u2019 for you for the new State Pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">It is the higher of either:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">the amount you would have got under the previous State Pension system up to 6 April 2016, or<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">the amount you would get on your record to 6 April 2016 if the new State Pension had been in place at the start of your working life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Both amounts reflect any periods when you were contracted out of the Additional State Pension. Your \u2018starting amount\u2019 could be less than, more than or equal to the full new State Pension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">If your \u2018starting amount\u2019 is less than the full amount of the new State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Each \u2018qualifying year\u2019 you add to your National Insurance record after April 5, 2016 will add a certain amount (about \u00a36.57 a week, this is \u00a3230.25 divided by 35) to your \u2018starting amount\u2019, until you reach the full amount of the new State Pension or you reach State Pension age, whichever happens first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">If your \u2018starting amount\u2019 is more than the full amount of the new State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">You will get this higher amount when you reach State Pension age. It is possible to have a starting amount higher than the full new State Pension if you have some Additional State Pension. The difference between the full new State Pension and your \u2018starting amount\u2019 is called your \u2018protected payment\u2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">If your \u2018starting amount\u2019 is equal to the full new State Pension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">You will get the full new State Pension when you reach State Pension age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How can I find out how much State Pension I could get?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">You can get a State Pension forecast online from the Check your State Pension service <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/check-state-pension\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"hereLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. This provides personalised information, including your State Pension age, an estimate of how much State Pension you may get at that point and if you can increase this amount.
