{"id":290147,"date":"2025-07-25T08:48:22","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T08:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/290147\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T08:48:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T08:48:22","slug":"trump-pulls-us-out-of-woke-unesco-the-art-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/290147\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump pulls US out of \u2018woke\u2019 Unesco &#8211; The Art Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">On 22 July, the US Department of State informed Unesco Director-General Audrey Azoulay that the country would be <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/withdrawal-united-states-america-unesco-statement-audrey-azoulay-director-general\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">withdrawing<\/a> from the organisation, citing continued involvement as \u201cnot in the national interest of the United States\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The Trump administration continues to centre anti-DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) initiatives and extra-institutional engagement in contemporary conservative governance. The Unesco decision, anticipated to take effect on 31 December 2026, marks a return to form for the president. Trump <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2017\/10\/12\/us-to-pull-out-of-unesco-by-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">withdrew the US from the organisation<\/a> during his first term in 2017, citing \u201canti-Israel\u201d bias. The US <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2023\/07\/12\/united-states-rejoins-unesco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">re-joined Unesco<\/a> under Joe Biden in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Unesco is the third United Nations agency Trump has pulled out of the year, after rescinding US membership in the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cPresident Trump has decided to withdraw the United States from Unesco\u2014which supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes that are totally out-of-step with the commonsense policies that Americans voted for in November,\u201d a White House spokesperson said in a <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/22\/politics\/unesco-un-us-withdrawal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement to the press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In February, Trump had signed an executive order requiring Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State, to review international organisations, including Unesco, for signs of \u201cradical or anti-American sentiment\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Azoulay said in a statement that she \u201cdeeply regrets\u201d the US president\u2019s decision, further explaining: \u201cThe reasons put forward by the United States to withdraw from the organisation are the same as seven years ago, even though the situation has changed profoundly, political tensions have receded and Unesco today constitutes a rare forum for consensus on concrete and action-orientated multilateralism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The US\u2019s <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/2009-2017.state.gov\/p\/io\/unesco\/usunesco\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relationship<\/a> with Unesco has long been characterised by cycles of membership and withdrawal. While the US was a founding member of the organisation in 1945, Ronald Reagan initiated the country\u2019s withdrawal in 1984. George W. Bush oversaw its re-entry into Unesco in 2003. In 2011, under Barack Obama, the US stopped funding Unesco after a vote passed to include Palestine as a full member. At the time, the US\u2019s withdrawal presented a large financial hardship for the organisation; today, according to Azoulay, the country only accounts for about <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-blue-900\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/22\/world\/europe\/us-withdraw-unesco.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8% of Unesco\u2019s budget<\/a> and the US decision was, in her words, \u201canticipated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Meanwhile, the second-largest funding stream for Unesco is China. Without a US presence, China has arisen as an influential leader in Unesco\u2019s ecosystem. Currently, a Chinese official is serving as Unesco\u2019s deputy director-general.
