{"id":290869,"date":"2025-07-25T15:02:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T15:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/290869\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T15:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T15:02:11","slug":"thousands-of-doctors-in-england-strike-over-pay-disrupting-patient-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/290869\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of doctors in England strike over pay, disrupting patient care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Thousands of doctors in England\u2019s <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uk-national-health-service-nhs-anniversary-9bd203359632d8945c1cbae9031c1615\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state-funded health system<\/a> walked off the job Friday in a five-day strike over pay that the government says will disrupt care for patients across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Resident doctors, those early in their careers who form the backbone of hospital and clinic care, took to picket lines outside hospitals after talks with the government broke down.<\/p>\n<p>The National Health Service said emergency departments would be open and hospitals and clinics would try to carry out as many scheduled appointments as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors are seeking a pay raise to make up for what their union, the British Medical Association, says is a 20% real-terms pay cut since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen doctors decide to take strike action it\u2019s always portrayed as though we\u2019re being selfish, but we\u2019re here as a body to help the public day in, day out, to work hours that don\u2019t even end sometimes,\u201d said Kelly Johnson, a doctor on the picket line outside St. Thomas\u2019 Hospital in central London,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere we are just trying to get what\u2019s right for us so we can do our best to serve the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government says doctors have received an average 28.9% increase as part of a deal to settle previous strikes and it will not offer more, but is willing to discuss improved working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged the doctors to go back to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people do not support these strikes. They know they will cause real damage,\u201d he wrote in The Times newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the headlines are the patients whose lives will be blighted by this decision. The frustration and disappointment of necessary treatment delayed. And worse, late diagnoses and care that risks their long-term health,\u201d Starmer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Health sector staff staged <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/england-junior-doctors-strike-uk-election-pay-61b30a19987ba4f8517702ee260642d2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a series of rolling strikes<\/a> over more than a year in 2023-24, seeking pay rises to offset the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/thousands-march-in-london-to-protest-surging-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rising cost of living<\/a>.
