The research, conducted by pension advisors <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.almondfinancial.co.uk\/pension-breakeven-index-how-does-the-uk-state-pension-compare-to-the-rest-of-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Almond FinancialLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Almond Financial<\/a>, looked at the current State Pension in comparison to the average cost of living in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Almond Financial then looked at similar data in European countries to establish which country offers the most to retirees in comparison to the country\u2019s current<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/extra-payments-state-pension-age-35064115\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" cost of livingLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> cost of living<\/a> data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It then analysed the average cost of general living expenses such as food shopping, the price of a meal at a restaurant and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/martin-lewis-energy-bill-refunds-35071014\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"energy billsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">energy bills<\/a> to discover an estimated cost of living per month, excluding rent.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/extra-payments-state-pension-age-35064115\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Up to \u00a3374 one-off payments for people over State Pension age due this year<\/a>READ MORE: <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/money\/pension-credit-rules-holidays-abroad-35063037\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pension Credit payment rules people should know before going on holiday this year<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The UK moved up four places from last year\u2019s report in the top 30, now coming in at number 11, continuing to linger just above the breakeven point for pension income.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Following changes to the new UK state pension system, British pensioners are better off than they were in 2024, seeing the State Pension vs average cost of living increase slightly, by 3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">However, this is still just 21.5 per cent above the breakeven point, the UK state pension pays \u00a3177 more than the average cost of living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The maximum UK State Pension will pay a total of \u00a3997.75 per month to retirees during the 2025\/26 financial year and the new data indicates the monthly cost of living for a single person (excluding rent) is \u00a3820.90.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It&#8217;s important to be aware the State Pension can be paid weekly, fortnightly or every four weeks in the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The full New State Pension is now worth \u00a3230.25 each week, or \u00a3921 every pay period, while someone on the full Basic State Pension receives \u00a3176.45 per week, some \u00a3705.80 each pay period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Topping the European Pension Breakeven Index is Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Luxembourg pension system pays out an average of \u00a35,426, the equivalent to a whopping \u00a34,429 more than the UK State Pension. With a similar cost of living, at least for the meantime, pensioners in Luxembourg can enjoy a comfortable retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Rounding out the rest of the top five are Spain, Norway, Belgium.
