\n\t\t\tHOLIDAY-MAKERS across the West Midlands are being urged to protect themselves and their families from potentially serious travel-related infections this summer.<\/p>\n
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) say 477 cases of gastrointestinal (GI) infections were reported by the region\u2019s residents when travelling abroad between 2022 and 2024 \u2013 the second highest case rate after the North East.<\/p>\n
These are generally picked up from infected water and food.\n<\/p>\n
The region also recorded the second highest rate of enteric fever (typhoid\/paratyphoid), with 67 cases.<\/p>\n
These are illnesses are caused by salmonella bacteria, more common in countries with less developed sanitary facilities and are spread is through food and drink, including shellfish affected by sewage entering drinking water.<\/p>\n
\nKatie Spence, UKHSA Regional Deputy Director West Midlands, said: \u201cThe West Midlands is a central transport hub and has a diverse population, so there is a lot of international travel, increasing risk of travel-related infections.<\/p>\n
\u201cMeasles remains an ongoing risk, both in England and abroad, particularly for children, so it\u2019s important to make sure everyone is up to date with their MMR vaccines.<\/p>\n
\u201cCertain countries also require specific vaccinations, so you should arrange these with your GP surgery in good time before travelling.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Travel Health Pro website, has detailed country-specific information, including what vaccines to get, any important medication such as malaria tablets, and how to avoid traveller\u2019s diarrhoea and other serious gastrointestinal infections.<\/p>\n
