Newcastle Falcons are reportedly lining up a sensational move for All Blacks scrum-half Finlay Christie, as Steve Diamond prepares to unleash a major recruitment drive ahead of the new Gallagher Premiership season.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to\u00a0RugbyPass<\/a>, Christie is being targeted as the first of potentially\u00a0a dozen\u00a0new arrivals at Kingston Park, as the club gears up for a dramatic overhaul \u2014 with Red Bull\u2019s rebrand of the Falcons set to kick in next year.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd25 Who is Finlay Christie?<\/p>\n

Full name:<\/strong>\u00a0Finlay Turner Christie, born 19 September 1995 in Peebles, Scottish Borders, Scotland<\/p>\n

Roots:<\/strong>\u00a0From the Borders region, raised in Peebles (and briefly Aberdeen) before his family emigrated to New Zealand at age seven, settling in Pukekohe, south of Auckland\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dual athlete:<\/strong>\u00a0A talented gymnast in his youth, representing New\u202fZealand before switching full\u2011time to rugby when he headed to Canterbury University and won the coveted Hawkins Medal as top club player in 2016<\/p>\n

Club pathway:<\/strong>\u00a0Broke in with Tasman in the NPC from 2016 on, starring in both their 2019 and 2020 Mitre\u202f10\/NPC Premiership wins. Super Rugby stints followed \u2014 Chiefs in 2017, Hurricanes in 2018\u201119, then a move to his childhood region with the Blues in 2020\u00a0<\/p>\n

Blues hero:<\/strong>\u00a0Became first\u2011choice halfback in 2021 and played a central role in Blues\u2019 Trans\u2011Tasman title, later helping them end a 21\u2011year drought more recently in 2024 (when he came back from injury to deliver in the Grand Final)\u00a0<\/p>\n

International rise:<\/strong>\u00a0Made his All Blacks debut as All Black No.\u202f1196 off the bench vs Tonga in July 2021. Since then he\u2019s earned at least 23 caps and featured from the bench in both the 2023 Rugby World Cup semi\u2011final and final \u2013 becoming the first Scottish\u2011born player to appear in a men\u2019s RWC final\u00a0<\/p>\n

Christie is lauded for his lightning\u2011fast service from the base, defensive grit and core composure \u2014 not flashy athleticism, he admits, but \u201chard work\u201d and \u201cgetting his core roles right\u201d that set him apart.<\/p>\n

If Newcastle do seal this deal, it won\u2019t just be a throwback to Christie\u2019s Scottish roots \u2014 it\u2019d be a statement of serious ambition by a Falcons side that\u2019s crying out for reinforcement following a relegation battle last season.<\/p>\n

So far, the only confirmed signing is centre Ethan Grayson from Major League Rugby\u2019s San Diego Legion, but that looks set to be just the start. Steve Diamond clearly means business.<\/p>\n
