It didn\u2019t exist. No one was building anything remotely like it. So I, without really knowing what I was doing, decided to go and make it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Look, sometimes I do a lot of blah blah upfront to hype the episode, but there are few Canadians who can say they built a hardware company out of the University of Waterloo\u2019s Velocity garage, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/discover\/advanced?sort=most_funded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">three of the 15 most-funded Kickstarters<\/a> of all time, selling over 2 million smartwatches before ultimately shutting down. I can think of only one Canadian who convinced Google to open-source the IP of their dream device a decade after it was sold twice, following stints at one of the world\u2019s best tech accelerators and selling their other tech company, messaging app Beeper, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/4\/9\/24124179\/beeper-app-automattic-acquisition-matrix-messaging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">the makers of WordPress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the podcast, Migicovsky covers how the first iteration of Pebble came to be (shoutout to the BlackBerry smartphone-connecting <a href=\"https:\/\/betakit.com\/pebbles-ceo-talks-how-they-succeeded-by-making-the-biggest-bets-of-their-entire-company-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">InPulse<\/a>, which came before), <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@ericmigi\/why-pebble-failed-d7be937c6232\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">why Pebble failed<\/a> (and how much Apple had to do with it), his crazy journey to <a href=\"https:\/\/repebble.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">RePebble<\/a>, and the lessons he learned along the way.
