Sat 26 July 2025 12:13, UK

Liverpool have been backed to sell Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez in order to land Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

The Reds have had a sensational summer transfer window as Arne Slot wastes no time in consolidating his first Premier League title.

Florian Wirtz’s signature, worth over £100million from Bayer Leverkusen, rocked the transfer market.

Further additions in Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt shows Liverpool mean serious business ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Success on Merseyside inevitably will attract the world’s best players, including Newcastle’s Isak.

The Swede has been linked with a move to Anfield all summer as Slot looks to bolster his attack, seeking to dominate across all competitions next season.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" loading="lazy" Premier League-winning empire similar to Man City (Credit: Imago)

MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES

Key Liverpool sales would be enough to bring in Isak

Speaking on talkSPORT (24 July), ex-Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor proposed how Liverpool could raise the necessary funds to buy “£130m” Isak.

He said: “If you look at Liverpool turning down Bayern Munich offers for £60-70m for [Luis] Diaz, Harvey Elliott is a £40m player minimum.

“Then you look at [Darwin] Nunez, you want £50m for him, so you’ve got the funds there selling those players to pay for [Alexander] Isak.”

Agbonlahor highlighted who the Reds should sell to get their hands on IsakReds could be risking depth to sign expensive players

Football Insider verdict

Whilst there is no doubt the signing of the Swedish striker would be an excellent acquisition, selling three players to fund one may backfire.

Given the expected fixture congestion, Slot must ensure he has enough players to rotate throughout the season.

It is part of the reason why Man City under Pep Guardiola have been do dominant due to the sheer size of the squad.

This allowed them to compete on all fronts, leading to frequent doubles and troubles during their conquering reign

In particular, the exit of Diaz would leave the left-hand side looking extremely light.

The Colombian was rotated with Cody Gakpo last season and his departure would leave the Dutchman as Liverpool’s only recognised left-winger.

Nunez’s sale would not affect the striker position should Isak come the other way, yet the Swede has shown he is injury prone during his spell at Newcastle.

Although it has been an excellent window on Merseyside, caution may be needed to not risk losing squad depth for one single player.

Related
