{"id":293413,"date":"2025-07-26T13:46:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T13:46:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/293413\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T13:46:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T13:46:21","slug":"trump-plays-golf-in-scotland-as-protesters-take-to-the-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/293413\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump plays golf in Scotland as protesters take to the streets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump played golf Saturday at <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-scotland-golf-course-opening-legal-issues-92aa09043e036d6aa87ad99e5fd755bb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his course on Scotland\u2019s coast<\/a> while protesters around the country took to the streets to decry <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-scotland-mother-ancestry-golf-d31dadc1ef89591b82efaabfdcb2ddde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his visit<\/a> and accuse United Kingdom leaders of pandering to the American.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and his son Eric played with the U.S. ambassador to Britain, Warren Stephens, near Turnberry, a historic course that the Trump family\u2019s company took over in 2008. Hundreds of protesters gathered on the cobblestone and tree-lined street in front of the U.S. Consulate about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away in Edinburgh, Scotland\u2019s capital. <\/p>\n<p>Speakers on a makeshift stage told the crowd that Trump was not welcome and they criticized <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/keir-starmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/a> for striking a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-starmer-trade-deal-beef-g7-52bea5eb383a0b45d0d83e1982d277bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent trade deal<\/a> to avoid stiff U.S. <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tariffs<\/a> on goods imported from the U.K. <\/p>\n<p>Protests were planned in other cities as environmental activists, opponents of Israel\u2019s war with Hamas in Gaza and pro-Ukraine groups loosely formed a \u201cStop Trump Coalition.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there are far too many countries that are feeling the pressure of Trump and that they feel that they have to accept him and we should not accept him here,\u201d said June Osbourne, 52, a photographer and photo historian from Edinburgh who protested wearing a red cloak and white hood, recalling \u201cThe Handmaid\u2019s Tale.\u201d Osbourne held up picture of Trump with \u201cResist\u201d stamped over his face. <\/p>\n<p>The dual-U.S.-British citizen said the Republican president was \u201cthe worst thing that has happened to the world, the U.S., in decades.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s protests were not nearly as large as the throngs that came out across Scotland when Trump played at the resort during his first term in 2018. <\/p>\n<p>But bagpipes played, people chanted \u201cTrump Out!\u201d and raised homemade signs that said \u201cNo red carpet for dictators,\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t want you here\u201d and \u201cStop Trump. Migrants welcome.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One dog had a sign that said \u201cNo treats for tyrants.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Some on the far right took to social media to call for gatherings supporting Trump in places such as Glasgow. Upon arriving in Scotland on Friday night, Trump admonished European leaders for not cracking down on immigration. \u201cThis immigration is killing Europe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou better get your act together,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou\u2019re not going to have Europe anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While in Scotland, Trump is set to talk trade with Starmer and Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president. But golf is a major focus. <\/p>\n<p>The Trumps will also visit another Trump course, in the Aberdeen area in northeastern Scotland.
