{"id":293553,"date":"2025-07-26T15:01:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T15:01:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/293553\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T15:01:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T15:01:21","slug":"us-approves-322m-in-weapons-sales-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/293553\/","title":{"rendered":"US approves $322M in weapons sales to Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The State Department said Wednesday that it has approved $322 million in proposed weapons sales to Ukraine to enhance its air defense capabilities and provide armored combat vehicles, coming as the country works to fend off <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-drones-putin-attacks-0a06736dea37114aa0f351d21746912b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">escalating Russian attacks<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The potential sales, which the department said were notified to Congress, include $150 million for the supply, maintenance, repair and overhaul of U.S. armored vehicles, and $172 million for surface-to-air missile systems. <\/p>\n<p>The approvals come weeks after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed a pause on other weapons shipments to Ukraine to allow the Pentagon to assess its weapons stockpiles, in a move that caught the White House by surprise. President Donald Trump then made an <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/putin-trump-call-ukraine-iran-9b0054c655cbb3b54126bb3f2c32713c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abrupt change in posture<\/a>, pledging publicly earlier this month to continue to send weapons to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey have to be able to defend themselves. They\u2019re getting hit very hard now. We\u2019re going to send some more weapons \u2014 defensive weapons primarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump recently endorsed a plan to have European allies buy U.S. military equipment that can then be <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-rutte-nato-putin-ukraine-524abe34764e4bb5838bbc90fc992520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transferred to Ukraine<\/a>. It was not immediately clear how the latest proposed sales related to that arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. has provided more than $67 billion in weapons and security assistance to Kyiv. <\/p>\n<p>Since Trump came back into office, his administration has gone back and forth about providing more military aid to Ukraine, with political pressure to stop U.S. funding of foreign wars coming from the isolationists inside the Trump administration and on Capitol Hill. <\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the war, the U.S. has routinely pressed for allies to provide air defense systems to Ukraine.
