{"id":294238,"date":"2025-07-26T21:13:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T21:13:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/294238\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T21:13:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T21:13:11","slug":"100ml-liquid-limit-set-to-be-scrapped-for-flyers-across-europe-news-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/294238\/","title":{"rendered":"100ml liquid limit set to be scrapped for flyers across Europe | News World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_258254519-13f7-e1753552710929.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23758885\" alt=\"Passenger putting their liquid items into a plastic bag at airport security.\" decoding=\"sync\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tEuropean holidaymakers are in for a treat (Picture: Shutterstock \/ Monkey Business Images)<\/p>\n<p>Flyers travelling through some of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/europe-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a>\u2019s biggest airports can soon forget about the pesky 100ml liquid limits.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a> is set to allow passengers to fly with up to two litres of perfumes, bottles of wine and more in hand luggage at airports with advanced new CT scanners.<\/p>\n<p>Holidaymakers flying out of <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/berlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Berlin<\/a>, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/rome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rome<\/a>, Milan, Amsterdam and scores of other hotspots could soon benefit.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as Birmingham and Edinburgh scrap the 100ml liquid rule in cabin baggage, while other UK airports still enforce the limit.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_230057726-78f6.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23758881\" alt=\"Toiletry bag full of liquids and a tote bag on a plastic tray moving along a roller conveyor at airport security baggage scanner.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tNew CT scanners will make the clear plastic bags a thing of the past (Picture: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Under current rules,\u00a0liquids in hand baggage must be packed in containers carrying no more than 100ml, with some exceptions for baby products and medicines.<\/p>\n<p>The new changes hinge on the advanced Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX scanners made by Smiths Detection. <\/p>\n<p>These huge devices mean any threats within hand luggage can be picked up on without the need to use of clear plastic bags or keep liquids within 100ml bottles.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a host of UK and European airports had these scanners in place and scrapped the 100ml liquids rule.<\/p>\n<p>But a <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/09\/01\/eu-airports-re-introduce-100ml-liquids-rule-means-21527436\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technical fault meant it had to be quickly reintroduced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, an updated algorithm on the Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX scanners has now been developed and approved by the European Commission in June.<\/p>\n<p>Now all eyes turn to getting the green light from the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC).<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_98781158-8ac5.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23758882\" alt=\"Passengers queue to enter airport security ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, at Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport, in London, Britain, April 14, 2022. The guidelines require liquids to comply with the following restrictions if they\u2019re in your carry-on:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Containers must hold no more than\u00a0<strong>100ml<\/strong>\n<\/li>\n<li>Containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm<\/li>\n<li>Contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed<\/li>\n<li>The bag must not be knotted or tied at the top<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019re limited to 1 plastic bag per person<\/li>\n<li>You must show the bag at the airport security point<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This could come as soon as next week, Italian newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corriere.it\/economia\/trasporti\/aerei\/25_luglio_24\/voli-niente-limite-ai-liquidi-nel-bagaglio-a-mano-l-europa-verso-il-via-libera-cosa-cambia-e-da-quando-2799e5e2-11b2-49f3-9f2c-dbd66bd28xlk.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Corriere della Sera<\/a> reports. The European Commission has reportedly confirmed this.<\/p>\n<p>Once the ECAC gives the thumbs up, tourists could soon bring up to 2 litres of liquid, aerosols and gels when they fly out of Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The advanced CT scanners can be found in Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Malta, Sweden, and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>They could all relax their liquid limits once the approval comes in.<\/p>\n<p>These scanners also mean that laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices can be kept in your hand luggage.<\/p>\n<p>The 100ml liquid rule was first introduced in 2006 after the\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/metropolitan-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Metropolitan Police<\/a>\u00a0quashed a terrorist plot to bring down seven transatlantic flights using liquid explosives stored in 500ml soft\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/drinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drinks<\/a>\u00a0bottles.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/SEI_259183813-8400.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23677522\" alt=\"Entrance to the terminal building of Edinburgh Airport.\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"\/><br \/>\n\t\tFlyers going through Edinburgh Airport are already exempt from the liquid rules (Picture: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh and Birmingham have this updated technology in place and have already relaxed the 100ml restrictions. <\/p>\n<p>But other UK airports are not at a stage where the limit can be dropped, according to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander.<\/p>\n<p>Airports such as Teesside, London City, Southend, Leeds Bradford, Teesside, Newcastle and Aberdeen\u00a0<a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/03\/07\/going-holiday-uk-airports-already-binned-liquid-rules-20413961\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had these high-tech scanners in place last year<\/a> but are still enforcing the old limits.<\/p>\n<p>Gatwick Airport installed <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/05\/gatwick-airport-makes-change-liquid-rules-just-time-easter-holidays-22855614\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/05\/gatwick-airport-makes-change-liquid-rules-just-time-easter-holidays-22855614\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new CT 3D scanning machines<\/a> on all of its 19 security lanes this spring.
