At one point it even appeared to be running the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-04-24\/world-economy-latest-russia-s-economy-risks-overheating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"media-ui-Link_link-tVkXhPLPofs-\" data-component=\"link\">overheating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"media-ui-Paragraph_text-SqIsdNjh0t0-\" data-component=\"paragraph\">But cracks in the $2 trillion economy are now abundantly clear. This newsletter suggested in November that 2025 would be a year of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2024-11-30\/russia-may-have-to-choose-between-guns-and-butter-in-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"media-ui-Link_link-tVkXhPLPofs-\" data-component=\"link\">consumer retrenchment<\/a> as Moscow was forced to choose guns over butter. That dynamic was on display this week: Putin attended a flag-raising ceremony for Russia\u2019s latest nuclear-powered <a href=\"http:\/\/en.kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/news\/77561\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"media-ui-Link_link-tVkXhPLPofs-\" data-component=\"link\">ballistic missile submarine<\/a>, the fifth of the new Borei-A class built in the past six years.
