Pulp<\/a> played \u2018Last Day Of The Miners\u2019 Strike\u2019 live for the first time at Sheffield\u2019s Tramlines Festival<\/a>, joined by Richard Hawley<\/a> \u2013 watch below.<\/p>\n

The band were at the top of the bill at the Hillsborough Park event in their hometown on Friday night<\/a> (July 25) and to mark the occasion, they dug deep into their back catalogue to play a couple of songs directly inspired by the Steel City.<\/p>\n

Early in the set they played 1992 B-side \u2018Sheffield: Sex City\u2019 for the first time since 2012, and later they gave a live debut to \u2018Last Day Of The Miners\u2019 Strike\u2019, the track first released on their 2002 compilation album \u2018Hits\u2019.<\/p>\n

They were joined by fellow Sheffield native Hawley \u2013 a longtime friend and former touring member of the band \u2013 for the latter, with Hawley also returning for the show-closing \u2018Common People\u2019 and \u2018A Sunset\u2019.<\/p>\n

Writing after the show on Instagram, Jarvis Cocker wrote: \u201cTramlines \u2013 you were so fine!
It was so good to play in The Sheff last night. We played \u201cLast Day of the Miners\u2019 Strike\u201d for the first time ever. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to explain that it was inspired by Craig Oldham\u2019s book In Loving Memory Of Work, a book about the writer\u2019s family\u2019s experience of the 1980s strikes against the Thatcher government.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so good to share a proper summer evening with all of you,\u201d Cocker added. \u201cA massive thanks to everyone else who performed throughout the day. Best line-up ever!\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, Pulp also played a triumphant \u201csurprise\u201d show on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2025<\/a>, filling the slot that was previously only labelled as the mysterious \u2018Patchwork\u2019.<\/p>\n

NME was at the set, awarding it five stars and noting<\/a>: \u201cWith songs for the mis-shapes, a whole lotta \u2018L-O-V-E\u2019 and even\u00a0a Red Arrows fly-past for the glorious crowd-engulfing \u2018Common People<\/a>\u2019, these legends capture the spirit of these hallowed grounds with a little peace, love and joyous wonky-pop hedonism. One for the books? Sure, but as Cocker puts it: \u201cHistory and stuff like that doesn\u2019t matter because it\u2019s all about now and what we can do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cocker also spoke to NME in June about the loss of Sheffield\u2019s iconic Leadmill venue<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a bit like when Starbucks first started and they would close down all the coffee bars to open theirs,\u201d he said. \u201cLeadmill was already a successful venue but now someone has bought it. They\u2019re not turning it into flats, which is what usually happens.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a weird thing: that idea that you can invent a scene\u2026 This is the first place that Pulp played in Sheffield, it\u2019s developed over a lot of time, and to create a place with that kind of history and atmosphere to it is not something that you can buy.\u201d<\/p>\n
