It\u2019s not the luck, it\u2019s the skill and timing of the Irish that enabled rising jockey Siobhan Rutledge<\/a> to salute on gelding The Irish<\/a> at Doomben<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n

If there was ever an omen bet for punters on a wet and cold day at the Brisbane track, this was the one, alongside $20 roughie Super Duck\u2019s<\/a> win on a bog surface in the following race. <\/p>\n

Sunshine Coast trainer James Healy<\/a> laughed at the irony of the situation, while praising Rutledge for her professionalism and willingness to follow instructions on the $16 chance in the Benchmark 78 race over 2200m on a heavy track. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat was Siobhan\u2019s first ride for me, first win,\u201d a beaming Healy said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI just wanted someone who I knew would give 110 per cent to the horse and listen to what I said and she rode him to an absolute tee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said to her it\u2019s an omen \u2013 the Irish on The Irish \u2013 so you can ride him.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s on another horse of mine called Monastery<\/a> on Wednesday (at Doomben) at 52.5 kg so hopefully she can get the same result.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rutledge, who turns 27 next month, said she was \u201chaving a ball\u201d since arriving in Brisbane from Ireland in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very different style of racing over here but I\u2019m enjoying it and I\u2019m finding everyone\u2019s been helpful,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to be able to ride with the lighter weights as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she\u2019s drawn plenty of inspiration from fellow Brisbane-based Irish jockeys Robbie Dolan<\/a>, the reigning Melbourne Cup champion, and Martin Harley<\/a>, who rode crack colt Cool Archie<\/a> to victory in the $1m Group 1 JJ Atkins<\/a> (1600m) at Eagle Farm<\/a> last month. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re the kind of guys you want to learn from when you come over, even if it\u2019s relating things from back home to here,\u201d Rutledge said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLuke Dempsey<\/a> has been very helpful to me as well, as have Robbie and Martin, just explaining how things work here as opposed to back home.<\/p>\n

\u201cI plan to stay here indefinitely, I want to give it a really good go.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m getting my heels dug in and just trying to get rides on horses with chances. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very competitive here, especially on Saturdays, but I\u2019ve been lucky and I\u2019ve had great support from (trainers) Gillian Heinrich<\/a> and Chris and Corey Munce<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rutledge said learning how to time her runs in races had been critical to her success in southeast Queensland, with the Irishwoman now having a \u201cclock\u201d in her head. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s anything that will stand me in good stead in the long run, I think it\u2019s learning how to judge pace, how fast you should be going, and nearly to the second,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause all the gallops are timed here and they\u2019re tracked, you can go back and revise them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can remember \u2018oh I was going a little too quick\u2019 and you see that reflected on the computer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the biggest thing I\u2019ll take away from my experience here. It makes you have a clock in your head after several months of racing here.\u201d<\/p>\n
