A Wetherspoon pub was evacuated this afternoon as emergency services investigated a possible gas leak. Merseyside Police<\/a> and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service<\/a> were called to the Barker’s Brewery on Archway Road in Huyton<\/a> at around 1.45pm today (July 27) after what was thought to be the smell of gas was detected.<\/p>\n

Several emergency service vehicles attended and a cordon was established around the pub. A fire service spokesperson told the ECHO<\/a> that people were evacuated from the pub while a multi-gas detector was used to investigate.<\/p>\n

Gas company Cadent also attended the scene and performed checks in the area. However no evidence of gas was found.<\/p>\n

One fire engine remained on scene at around 3pm but the incident has been determined to be a false alarm.<\/p>\n

About the Huyton venue, the Wetherspoon<\/a> website says: “The pub was built on the site of Barker\u2019s Brewery, run by the brothers Richard and William Barker, and was founded on this site in 1825.<\/p>\n

“The brewery site extended forward onto what is now the dual carriageway. In front of Barker\u2019s Brewery was the original Rose and Crown, once a coaching inn which stopped trading as a public house in 1938 and was demolished for road-widening in 1967.”<\/p>\n
