{"id":296501,"date":"2025-07-27T18:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T18:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/296501\/"},"modified":"2025-07-27T18:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T18:16:12","slug":"us-and-eu-strike-trade-deal-setting-15-percent-tariff-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/296501\/","title":{"rendered":"US and EU strike trade deal setting 15 percent tariff \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Escalate to de-escalate<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s escalation had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-hits-eu-with-sweeping-30-percent-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stunned EU trade negotiators<\/a>, who had been led to believe by their U.S. interlocutors that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-faces-dilemma-tariff-showdown-donald-trump-trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a preliminary deal was within reach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A battle of nerves ensued, as Trump announced a string of other deals \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/07\/22\/trump-claims-new-trade-deal-with-japan-00468891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including one with Japan<\/a> that set a baseline tariff of 15 percent while offering relief to its auto industry. Some observers saw that setting a benchmark for the future terms of the \u20ac1.6 trillion transatlantic trade relationship.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the 27-nation bloc activated its trade countermeasures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-support-30-percent-retaliatory-tariff-on-us-goods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drawing up a list targeting \u20ac93 billion in U.S. goods<\/a> \u2014\u00a0ranging from aircraft to autos, and from soybeans to Kentucky bourbon \u2014 that would face retaliatory tariffs of up to 30 percent. Those were due to enter force from Aug. 7 onwards, absent a deal.<\/p>\n<p>Von der Leyen had earlier stressed the significance of the $1.7 trillion transatlantic trade relationship \u2014\u00a0the world\u2019s largest \u2014\u00a0and appealed to Trump to do the biggest deal that either of them have ever done.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking afterwards, she said: \u201cThe two biggest economies should have a good trade flow between us. I think we hit exactly the point we wanted to find. Rebalance but enable trade on both sides.
