{"id":296812,"date":"2025-07-27T21:08:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T21:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/296812\/"},"modified":"2025-07-27T21:08:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-27T21:08:15","slug":"riders-cycle-from-yorkshire-to-london-for-jo-cox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/296812\/","title":{"rendered":"Riders cycle from Yorkshire to London for Jo Cox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 100 people have cycled from Yorkshire to London in memory of Jo Cox, the MP who was murdered in June 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The 290-mile ride \u2013 The Jo Cox Way \u2013 has been taking place for a decade, and it raises money for The Jo Cox Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>They were welcomed in the capital by Mrs Cox&#8217;s parents alongside her sister Kim Leadbeater, the MP for Spen Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Cox, who was MP for the constituency under its former guise of Batley &amp; Spen, was shot and stabbed multiple times in Birstall, West Yorkshire, by white supremacist Thomas Mair.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Leadbeater said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve had more cyclists than ever&#8230; I think it&#8217;s fair to say the 10th Jo Cox Way has been a huge success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These riders are just amazing. It just shows the best of people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a huge physical and mental challenge and every single one of these cyclists has earnt the respect of everyone they know.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jo was a passionate campaigner for gender equality so it&#8217;s wonderful to see nearly 60 women riding this year and showing that cycling really is for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Three women in cycling gear with medals. They have their arms around each others' shoulders.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/b1f6841d4f38c77c94e7d72f4e7cfcbc.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Kath Lyons from Skipton, Jayne Bellwood from Morley and Paula Stega from Idle [The Jo Cox Way]<\/p>\n<p>The youngest of the 103 participants in this year&#8217;s ride \u2013 which involves 13,000ft of climbing \u2013 was 21 while the oldest was 80-year-old Kath Lyons from Skipton, who completed the route for the fourth time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been doing The Jo Cox Way again to remind myself what Jo stood for,&#8221; Mrs Lyons said. &#8220;We all have more in common than we think.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are always times on the ride when you think &#8216;What the hell am I doing this for?&#8217; but we just encourage each other to get to the top of the next hill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"A man in a red cycling top smiling at the camera.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/59a4529a68017ac7c63f2f3810d9b744.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ken Avery completed the ride with support from his family [The Jo Cox Way]<\/p>\n<p>Ken Avery, 76, from Liversedge, West Yorkshire, has terminal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>His daughter rode alongside him for the first few miles of the journey, and his son crossed the finish line with him in London.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think they&#8217;re both proud of me because I&#8217;m doing something that I enjoy and it&#8217;s keeping me fit and healthy,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Avery was told he could expect to live for another 10 years \u2013 but that was 15 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;I believe it&#8217;s down to cycling and keeping fit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"A smiling man with a short grey beard and wearing a cycling helmet.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/21e847a9eee545653443959130404fa4.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It was the first time Saeed Umar did the ride [The Jo Cox Way]<\/p>\n<p>Saeed Umar, 50, from Blackburn, was taking part for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a great event, bringing together people of different abilities from across the country to help each other through this epic ride &#8211;
