At least four people were killed when a train derailed in a wooded area in Germany<\/a>,\u00a0spilling two carriages from the tracks.<\/p>\n

The regional train in the southwest was carrying about 100 passengers of which several were seriously injured, police confirmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Two carriages left the tracks between the towns of Riedlingen and Munderkingen, near the corner of Germany that borders France<\/a>\u00a0and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Helicopters arrived shortly after the accident to transport the injured to hospitals in the area, and emergency doctors from nearby hospitals were alerted, according to local TV station SWR.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The train was on a roughly 90 km (55 miles) route between Sigmaringen and Ulm.<\/p>\n

The cause of the crash is under investigation, which happened ‘for reasons yet unknown’, according to the rail operator.<\/p>\n

Reports say that a landslide may have causes the crash as there had been severe storms in the area shortly before.<\/p>\n

Images of the carriages show they were largely intact but jackknifed into each other and rolled onto their sides.<\/p>\n

German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn said in a statement there were ‘many injured’ and its thoughts were with the victims and their loved ones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It was not clear what had caused the train to derail, it said, adding that it would support the authorities in their investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

German Chancellor Freidrich Merz said he ‘mourn[ed] the victims’ and offered his ‘deepest sympathy’ to their families in a post on X.<\/p>\n

He said he was in close contact with the interior and transport ministers, and has requested that they provide the emergency services with all the support they need.<\/p>\n
