\n The procession, organised by\u00a0Extinction Rebellion Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole (XR BCP) held the event to mark the ongoing destruction of the UK\u2019s natural world on Sunday, July 27.\n<\/p>\n
\n Participants assembled by the\u00a0Cenotaph before\u00a0a slow and silent procession made its way through the gardens, at its head a coffin carried by pallbearers and led by a “sombre rhythm” of drummers from XR BCP\u2019s.\n<\/p>\n
\n The procession finished at Bournemouth Pier, where the celebrants came together in poetry and song.\n<\/p>\n
\n The event concluded with a symbolic “die-in” which it said was to represent the growing mass extinction silently “unfolding around us”.\n<\/p>\n
\n Today\u2019s procession sought to raise awareness of this deepening crisis and inspire urgent action.\n<\/p>\n
\n Kath Chambers, from Bournemouth said: \u201cWe walked today not only in grief, but in resistance.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cWe\u2019re facing a quiet catastrophe, and it\u2019s time to break the silence.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n Liz Brereton, a counsellor\u00a0from Bournemouth: \u201cNobody held a funeral for the mature oak tree that used to grow in my road before it was cruelly destroyed in the name of progress.\n<\/p>\n
\n “So, today in my heart, I held one for them all.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n The procession created a striking and emotional atmosphere, prompting passers-by to stop, reflect, and join in.\n<\/p>\n
\n Liz Elwick, a retired council worker from Bournemouth, said: \u201cThis wasn\u2019t just about loss.\n<\/p>\n
\n “It was about love \u2014 and what we\u2019re willing to do to protect what we still have.”\n<\/p>\n
\n “This is what grief looks like when we don\u2019t look away,\u201d said Daniel Glennon, a customer service professional, from Bournemouth.\n<\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt means we care. And caring is how change begins.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\n Organisers said while the tone of the event was mournful, the message was ultimately one of hope and a call to action.\n<\/p>\n
