Liverpool are still \u201cactively\u201d in the market for a new centre-back this summer and they have three key qualities they are seeking for the position.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joe Gomez<\/a>\u2018s early return to Liverpool<\/a> with an Achilles injury brought the club\u2019s needs at centre-back back into focus having seen the club focus elsewhere in the transfer window. <\/p>\n

Currently, Arne Slot<\/a> has only Virgil van Dijk<\/a> and Ibrahima Konate<\/a> as his two fit specialist options on tour after Jarell Quansah<\/a> left for Bayer Leverkusen<\/a> at the start of July.<\/p>\n

Marc Guehi is a primary target but Liverpool \u201care unlikely to be drawn into a saga\u201d with Crystal Palace<\/a> over their lofty demands for a player who is out of contract next summer, as per the Times<\/a>\u2018 Paul Joyce.<\/p>\n

According to the Mail<\/a>\u2018s Lewis Steele, Liverpool are still \u201cactively targeting centre-backs to boost their squad,\u201d but currently \u201cnothing is advanced.\u201d <\/p>\n

Liverpool\u2019s \u201cmain brief,\u201d though, is a centre-back who is \u201cyoung, adept on the ball and who could learn from Van Dijk and eventually evolve into his long-term replacement.\u201d<\/p>\n

You can, therefore, see why Guehi, 25, fits the bill as he is entering his prime years and has proved himself as a progressive, ball-playing centre-back who relishes one-on-one duels. <\/p>\n

He is not as proficient in the air as Van Dijk or Liverpool\u2019s other senior centre-backs, but that is not to say he cannot learn from the club captain.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the club had been monitoring Levi Colwill, Leny Yoro and Dean Huijsen but each elected to go elsewhere \u2013 they do, however, represent the profile Liverpool want.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

To that end, the club have recently been linked to Toulouse\u2019s Charlie Cresswell and Parma\u2019s Giovanni Leoni, while Jorrel Hato had been touted but is now closing in on a move to Chelsea<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Liverpool fans will know all too well what shortages at the back can lead to and seeing Ryan Gravenberch<\/a> and Kostas Tsimikas<\/a> fill in against AC Milan<\/a> offered an untimely reminder.<\/p>\n
