{"id":298493,"date":"2025-07-28T12:47:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T12:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298493\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T12:47:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T12:47:13","slug":"is-brexit-britain-a-winner-of-the-eu-and-us-trade-tie-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298493\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Brexit Britain a winner of the EU and US trade tie-up?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tMonday 28 July 2025 12:52 pm\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tShare<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"social-share__popup-item\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tFacebook\t\t\t\t\t\tShare on Facebook\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"social-share__popup-item\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tX\t\t\t\t\t\tShare on Twitter\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"social-share__popup-item\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tLinkedIn\t\t\t\t\t\tShare on LinkedIn\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"social-share__popup-item\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tWhatsApp\t\t\t\t\t\tShare on WhatsApp\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<li class=\"social-share__popup-item\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tEmail\t\t\t\t\t\tShare on Email\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GettyImages-2201640538-e1748942243680.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"\/>\t\tThe EU deal follows Trump and Starmer inking an agreement in May.\t<\/p>\n<p>Brexit Britain is set to have curbed another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/trump-and-eu-seal-trade-deal-with-15-per-cent-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">President Donald Trump trade offensive after the US and EU inked a deal<\/a> which economists dubbed a White House win and European retreat.<\/p>\n<p>The deal, announced late Sunday night, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/euro-weakens-as-markets-rally-following-eu-us-trade-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see the original US-imposed tariffs of 30 per cent on the EU slashed to 15 per cent.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission\u2019s President, hailed the \u201cgood deal\u201d as bringing \u201cstability\u201d and \u201cpredictability\u201d but economists have said they\u2019re \u201cnot so sure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Allen-Reynolds, deputy chief Euro-zone economist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitaleconomics.com\/topics-and-alerts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capital Economics<\/a>, said the deal would shave 0.5 per cent off EU GDP, which was \u201cworse than previously assumed\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Allen-Reynolds said \u201cthe deal was worse than what had been trailed in the press\u201d after reports circled that aircraft and medical equipment would be exempt from tariffs completely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Steel and aluminium have been the only named exemption from the 15 per cent baseline \u2013 in which 50 per cent tariffs will already apply.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agreement will also see the EU commit to further investment in the US by nearly $600bn as well as $750bn piled into US energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Uncertainty surrounds deals\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whilst markets responded positively as Europe opened in the green on Monday, uncertainty continues to cloud future prospects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdmittedly, for now the deal has avoided a much bigger and more damaging increase in US tariffs, as well as EU retaliation,\u201d Allen-Reynolds said.<\/p>\n<p>But the lingering uncertainty persists after a senior White House official told reporters in Washington that Trump retained the right to hike the levies in the future if European countries failed to live up to investment commitments.<\/p>\n<p>Allen-Reynolds said the deal \u201chas avoided a much worse outcome for now\u201d but \u201cit remains to be seen whether it will last\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cUncertainty is likely to remain high for the foreseeable future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Economists have pointed to the differences between the UK and US trade deal where, despite some opaque details, a clearer direction was provided.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts at RBC said: \u201cThe rub is that there seems to be controversy around what concretely was agreed to and, in contrast to the US\/UK deal, no official text has been released as of yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRead more<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/trump-and-eu-seal-trade-deal-with-15-per-cent-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trump secures \u2018big win\u2019 in EU trade deal after Brussels retreats<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer finalised the UK\u2019s deal with Trump in early May becoming the first nation to seal an agreement with the US after the White House\u2019s sweeping tariffs on trading partners the month prior.<\/p>\n<p>The UK was granted modest relief for automakers with tariffs on cars slashed to ten per cent for a quota of 100,000 vehicles.
