{"id":298502,"date":"2025-07-28T12:52:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T12:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298502\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T12:52:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T12:52:19","slug":"20m-in-start-up-loans-helps-northern-ireland-business-owners-on-road-to-success-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298502\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a320m in start up loans helps Northern Ireland business owners on road to success \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">From kids\u2019 soft play centres to luxury golfing escapes and mobile gaming firms to artisan pie shops, the British Business Bank has been playing a central role in helping turn Northern Ireland\u2019s entrepreneurial spirit into reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">For its Start Up Loans programme has reached a major milestone of deploying more than \u00a320 million to 2,034 local business owners in the region, helping them launch and grow their companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The most popular local authority for Start Up Loans is Mid-Ulster with 350 loans, followed by Belfast with 338, then Fermanagh &amp; Omagh with 242. In each of Newry Mourne &amp; Down and Armagh City, Banbridge &amp; Craigavon, 234 loans were issued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In Northern Ireland, a high percentage of the finance went to under-represented groups and those who would otherwise struggle to find finance to start a business. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/almost-50000-firms-near-collapse-amid-immense-strain-from-tax-hike-report-RA3RRIU2LNN3VC5PW6DQUC2AJM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Nearly 850 Northern Ireland businesses &#x2018;on verge of imminent collapse&#x2019; says report\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/AYEKDU47DNIMTDVFAT4KG6XOE4.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/business\/newry-engineering-firm-to-create-28-jobs-with-average-salary-of-54240-PPNSVQE57NB4RILCBU5JG3FRCI\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Newry engineering firm to create 28 jobs with average salary of &#xA3;54,250\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ZWWLPN3YR5E5HELURZUIOGZINU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The British Business Bank returned to profit over the past year\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/UNINFHEVENKBTOQP3PTEVB3TCM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"516\"\/>The British Business Bank has lent \u00a320 million to more than 2,000 entrepreneurs in Northern Ireland under its Start Up Loans scheme (Gareth Fuller\/PA) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Some 12% of borrowers were under 25, and within that group 32% were not in education, employment or training. 20% of borrowers were unemployed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Start Up Loans programme (www.startuploans.co.uk), while operating with a commercial focus, exists to help open up the finance market to underrepresented groups, who might otherwise struggle to access finance, so they can start viable businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Among those to have benefitted from the scheme is Norman Allen, owner of Dirty Harry\u2019s Specialist Cleaning Services NI, who said the Start Up Loan he took was the catalyst for kick-starting his new niche business \u2013 crime scene cleaning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He said: \u201cWe took two loans, with the first one helping me put a van on the road while the second one was used for cashflow and the day-to-day running of the business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe mentoring element has also been very beneficial. There are a number of areas you can receive mentoring in such as marketing, but as someone new to running a business my mentoring has been centred on building up my skills as a business owner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m glad I took the plunge. Being your own boss is extremely satisfying and the control I now have over my time is really pleasing.
