Start your dream house hunting here!<\/p>\n<p>Castles for sale in the UK<br \/>\nA castle for history buffs<br \/>\nRipley Castle, North Yorkshire (\u00a321 million)<\/p>\n<p>Ripley Castle in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/walks\/best-walks-north-yorkshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Yorkshire<\/a> once played host to James VI (James I of England) and Oliver Cromwell, and is now on the open market for the first time \u2013 a great opportunity for history lovers with heavy pockets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Built in the early 1300s, Ripley Castle sits on the edge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/yorkshire-dales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yorkshire Dales National Park<\/a> and has been home to the Ingilby family for the duration of its history. James VI stayed at the castle in 1604, but the Ingilbys were plotting to kill him. <\/p>\n<p>The castle held a key role in the Gunpowder Plot, with nine of the 11 known conspirators of the plot being close relations or associations of the Ingilby family. \u2018Trooper\u2019 Jane Ingilby held Oliver Cromwell prisoner overnight in the castle\u2019s library after the Battle of Marston Moor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/ripley-castle-2.webp\" alt=\"A castle sits in a landscape with a river behind and green trees and fields\" class=\"wp-image-203064\"\/>Ripley Castle, from above (credit: Carter Jonas)<\/p>\n<p>Sir Thomas and Lady Ingilby have explained that they have put the 445-acre estate on the market because they would like to retire after decades of managing the large estate and its commercial operations. <\/p>\n<p>Sir Thomas inherited the estate at the age of 18 and the pair have undertaken major restoration in the castle and replaced its roof over the years. \u2018We\u2019ve left it in the best state possible and safeguarded the heritage for future generations,\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj02eyv4v6yo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sir Thomas says<\/a>. \u2018I hope the new owner does appreciate the history,\u2019 Lady Ingilby adds. \u2018The history of the Ingilbys is the history of England. But nothing stands still; they must do what they like with it, as long as they just love it and take care of it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The estate includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/britains-best-cricket-grounds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cricket pitch<\/a>, hotel, tea room, village store, gift shop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/countryfile-tv-show\/countryfile-presenters\/five-of-britains-best-walled-gardens-to-visit-by-jules-hudson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walled gardens<\/a> and wedding venue, as well as the core Grade I-listed castle, which comes with 11 bedrooms, three reception rooms and six bathrooms. The estate is being divided into nine lots \u2013\u00a0or can be bought as a whole. The castle was owned by the Wemyss family from its earliest days in 1789 to 2003, when it first arrived on the open market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1082\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/seton-castle.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-203091\"\/>Seton Castle (credit: Savills)<\/p>\n<p>This seven-bedroom home comes with three additional separate dwellings \u2013\u00a0two self-contained cottages in the wings and a romantic Hideaway suite at the top of the turret spiral staircase. With original features dating back to the 18th century, it was built as a folly building \u2013\u00a0constructed for decoration, rather than as a castle for practical use. It was constructed from stone rubble and has Gothic-style windows opening at each level of the tower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/tawstock-castle-night.webp\" alt=\"A castle with dark blue skies at night lit up with spotlights\" class=\"wp-image-203075\"\/>Tawstock Castle at night (credit: Knight Frank)<\/p>\n<p>In 1988, Tawstock Castle was bought by a developer and renovated as a private residence. The renovations undertaken mean this is a significantly easier property to live in than other castles on the list, thanks to its modern restoration. It\u2019s still got plenty of charm, however, with a turret for a home office and a King Arthur-style round table for dinner parties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tawstock Castle is for sale with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knightfrank.co.uk\/properties\/residential\/for-sale\/tawstock-barnstaple-devon-ex31\/exe012449721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Knight Frank<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A castle for swimmers, complete with loch<br \/>\nCarbisdale Castle, Sutherland (\u00a35 million)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carbisdale Castle was built for the Duchess of Sutherland in the early 20th century, and comes with a natural loch for summer and winter swimmers alike. The estate reaches to about 29 acres, and includes an area of woodland.<\/p>\n<p>The Duchess of Sutherland commissioned the construction of the castle following her divorce from her husband, the 3rd Duke of Sutherland.
