{"id":298611,"date":"2025-07-28T13:50:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T13:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298611\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T13:50:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T13:50:15","slug":"liverpool-institution-warns-of-change-that-could-impact-thousands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298611\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool institution warns of change that could impact thousands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The change will come into place in a couple of months<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2_JS273579596.jpg\" alt=\"Outside the former Sayers bakery in Norris Green, before it was demolished, 2007\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The former Sayers bakery on Lorenzo Drive in Norris Green, Liverpool(Image: Howard H Hughes)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A Liverpool bakery has warned customers of a change coming to one of its most popular items. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/nostalgia\/liverpool-bakery-generations-worked-making-29370501\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sayers, once a Liverpool institution<\/a>, has largely disappeared from the city centre, though it still exists as a brand in the North West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It started as a family business in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/old-swan\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Swan in 1912<\/a>, selling baked goods from a basement kitchen. Since then, the company has undergone several changes, including a partial rebranding as Poundbakery and subsequent ownership changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sayers is now owned by Karen Wood and managed by Mark James and David Silvester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The group has announced it is \u201cimproving\u201d the glaze on its sausage rolls, pies, and pasties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Posters around the stores have informed customers that, from Sunday, September 22, all products will now include food that could impact people with certain allergies and dietary restrictions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_JRP_LEC_250120_sayers-7JPG.jpg\" alt=\"The Sayers Bakery on Allerton Road\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Sayers Bakery on Allerton Road(Image: Jason Roberts photography)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Moving forward from the date, the aforementioned products will contain milk and egg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The vegetable curry rolls and vegetarian sausage rolls will still use the current glaze to ensure they remain vegan-friendly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">If you&#8217;ve grown up in the region, you&#8217;ll likely have popped into a local Sayers store<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/nostalgia\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> through the years.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was well over a century ago that Fred and Lylian Sayer started the business on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/prescot\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Prescot<\/a> Road.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/3_JS273580063.jpg\" alt=\"Workers outside the Sayers factory, Norris Green, after it went into liquidation\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Workers outside the Sayers factory, Norris Green, after it went into liquidation in the 00s(Image: Trinity Mirror Copyright)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A decade later, the two moved production to County Road, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/walton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Walton<\/a>, before increasing demand saw Sayers move to a larger bakery in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/aintree\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Aintree<\/a> Road, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bootle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bootle<\/a>, in 1925.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">And many generations will also know the early 1930s saw another expansion, with<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/nostalgia\/lost-liverpool-bakery-generations-worked-24638027\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Sayers moving to a purpose-built bakery in Lorenzo Drive, Norris Green<\/a>, which went into liquidation and closed in the 00s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_JS312219900.jpg\" alt=\"Staff from the Sayers shop at Williamson Square, Liverpool.
