{"id":298679,"date":"2025-07-28T14:26:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T14:26:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298679\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T14:26:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T14:26:13","slug":"why-is-mary-poppins-britains-most-complained-about-film-of-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298679\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is &#8216;Mary Poppins&#8217; Britain\u2019s most complained about film of 2024?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n         Published on<br \/>\n            28\/07\/2025 &#8211; 15:47 GMT+2\n            <\/p>\n<p>          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/static.euronews.com\/website\/images\/logos\/logo-euronews-stacked-outlined-72x72-grey-9.svg\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n          ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>2024 was a great year for cinema, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/12\/20\/strippers-rebellion-and-figs-here-are-the-best-movies-of-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>several films that made our year<\/strong><\/a> featured some NSFW content.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it was the nudity in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/11\/01\/euronews-cultures-film-of-the-week-anora-sean-bakers-palme-dor-winning-anti-romcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Anora<\/strong><\/a>, the colourful language in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/12\/17\/kneecap-director-rich-peppiatt-the-hegemony-of-english-is-making-people-more-monolingual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kneecap<\/strong><\/a>, the grotesque body horror in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2025\/01\/24\/director-coralie-fargeat-on-the-substance-and-gender-parity-its-time-for-a-real-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Substance<\/strong><\/a> or some of the gorgeous yet horrific tableaus in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/06\/28\/directors-veronika-franz-severin-fiala-talk-the-devils-bath-and-giving-a-voice-to-the-voic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Devil\u2019s Bath<\/strong><\/a>, there was plenty to keep censors busy.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/03\/19\/gasp-bbfc-calls-for-stricter-guidelines-for-film-sex-and-nudity-in-the-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>British Board of Film Classification (BBFC)<\/strong><\/a> has revealed that none of these films were in consideration for the most complained about movie of 2024. <\/p>\n<p>It turns out that the new age rating given to a beloved classic caused the biggest stink&#8230; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbfc.co.uk\/annual-reports\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>annual report<\/strong><\/a>, the BBFC reveals that its decision to reclassify the 1964 classic Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, from a U (Universal \u2013 suitable for all) to a PG (Parental Guidance) has made it the most complained about movie of 2024. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the BBFC, of the 224 complaints made during the year, 56 were for\u00a0Mary Poppins \u2013 meaning it came ahead of complaints about knife fights in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/03\/01\/euronews-cultures-film-of-the-week-dune-part-two-a-bombastic-sequel-in-need-of-closure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dune: Part Two<\/strong><\/a> and that sex scene in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/culture\/2024\/02\/06\/traumatised-by-that-saltburn-scene-cosmetics-company-lush-have-got-you-covered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Saltburn<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, why was Mary Poppins\u2019 rating changed? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It all comes down to the word\u00a0\u201chottentots\u201d \u2013 which is used twice in the film by the character Admiral Boom, who refers to chimney sweeps covered in soot. <\/p>\n<p>Hottentots is a slur originally used by Dutch settlers\u00a0in South Africa \u2013 and was later used to refer to all Black people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those complaining to the BBFC deemed the discriminatory term to be too outdated and wanted the rating to remain unchanged\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David Austin, chief executive of the BBFC said: \u201cThe two uses of the discriminatory term \u2018hottentots\u2019 are neither criticised nor condemned, increasing the risk that very young viewers might repeat it without realising the potential for offence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, there were 17 complaints regarding the 1989 sci-fi classic The Abyss &#8211; regarding rumours that the film had been cancelled because of BBFC advice concerning a scene in which a man submerges a live rat in liquid \u2013 and Dune Part Two got 13 complaints from people feeling that the 12A (no one younger than 12 may be permitted to attend a 12A cinema screening unless they are accompanied by an adult) was too lenient.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding things off was the dark comedy\u00a0Saltburn, which tallied ten complaints after being rated 15 for \u201cstrong sex, nudity, sexual threat, drug misuse and very strong language\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Austin said: \u201cThose who got in touch with us generally felt that the film\u2019s depiction of sexual obsession was too disturbing for 15. Given the blackly comic tone of the film and that the key scenes, while strong, lacked graphic nudity and other visual explicitness,\u00a0Saltburn\u00a0meets our standards at a 15 classification.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The current UK ratings are U, PG, 12A\/12, 15, 18 and R18.
