{"id":298698,"date":"2025-07-28T14:37:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T14:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298698\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T14:37:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T14:37:12","slug":"anna-kalinskaya-explains-why-she-couldnt-prepare-for-very-tricky-leylah-fernandez-trait-before-washington-open-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/298698\/","title":{"rendered":"Anna Kalinskaya explains why she couldn\u2019t prepare for \u2018very tricky\u2019 Leylah Fernandez trait before Washington Open final"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Anna Kalinskaya\u2019s marvellous Washington Open run came to an end at the hands of Leylah Fernandez.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kalinskaya was simply outplayed by the Canadian, who only conceded three games during a 6-1 6-2 victory in <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/washington-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez, who secured a fourth WTA Tour singles title of her career, denied the Russian from winning her first-ever WTA Tour singles title.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian struggled to get a foothold in the match against the 22-year-old Canadian, and she showed little sign of mounting a comeback at any point.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2226707609-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Leylah Fernandez Wins 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open\" \/>Photo by Maxine Wallace\/The Washington Post via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Following the match, Kalinskaya spoke of playing her \u2018tricky\u2019 opponent, who <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/leylah-fernandez-reveals-the-coaching-advice-she-received-vs-elena-rybakina-which-completely-turned-the-match-around\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beat Elena Rybakina<\/a> and Jessica Pegula on her way to the title.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Kalinskaya says she doesn\u2019t have anyone to practise with who is left-handed<\/p>\n<p>The Russian, who only won 36 points in total compared to Fernandez\u2019s 56, was asked about the \u2018tricky\u2019 adaptation of playing a left-handed athlete like Fernandez; who c<a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/leylah-fernandez-reveals-the-key-motivation-that-stopped-her-from-taking-a-break-from-tennis-before-the-washington-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">onsidered taking a break from tennis after Wimbledon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Playing someone who hits groundstrokes from the opposite wing can provide unexpected results due to the varying flight paths of the ball and the amount of spin used on each shot respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian found this adaptation particularly tricky, noting that she couldn\u2019t find her rhythm \u2018at all.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>One reporter asked: \u201cPlaying Leylah, she\u2019s a left-hander. It\u2019s the first time you have played a left-hander in over a year. How tricky is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kalinskaya replied: \u201cYeah, it was very tricky for me. I think maybe last one was Haddad Maia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I don\u2019t really have anyone who I can hit with left-handed. It\u2019s very difficult to find. There are not too many. It was definitely an issue for me today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna Kalinskaya\u2019s serving troubles against Leylah Fernandez<\/p>\n<p>Anna Kalinskaya had a torrid time on serve against Leylah Fernandez in the Washington Open final.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian was broken four times by the Canadian, saving only two of the six break-points on her serve. Kalinskaya won only 18 points on serve, nearly half of Fernandez\u2019s total at 38.<\/p>\n<p>However, the most remarkable statistic concerns the total number of points the Russian won on her second serve.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"863\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/washington_tennishead-min-863x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-315967\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kalinskaya won just two points out of 12 on her second serve. At a percentage of 17 per cent, the Russian was likely to struggle when attempting to hold serve against Fernandez.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Fernandez won 50 per cent of her second serve points and 75 per cent of her first serve points.
