The deal, which imposes a 15 percent tariff on most imports from the EU, \u201csaves trade flows, saves the jobs in Europe\u201d and \u201copens a new chapter in EU-U.S. relations,\u201d he told reporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not only about \u2026 trade: It\u2019s about security, it is about Ukraine, it is about current geopolitical volatility,\u201d said \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, indicating that guaranteeing Washington\u2019s continued military support for Ukraine and NATO played a central part in the negotiations \u2014 and in pushing Brussels to clinch a deal.<\/p>\n

But while the EU executive hails the mere fact of sealing a deal a success, that didn\u2019t satisfy some EU heavyweights like France and industry lobbies, which accused Brussels of giving in too easily to Trump\u2019s demands.<\/p>\n

Unlike German Chancellor Friedrich Merz<\/a> and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni<\/a>, who were quick to welcome the deal, French President Emmanuel Macron has remained silent. His Prime Minister Fran\u00e7ois Bayrou, meanwhile, slammed the accord as an act of \u201csubmission\u201d<\/a> to Washington.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s main industry lobby BDI said it sent \u201ca fatal sign\u201d regarding the future of transatlantic trade. In France, big-business group Medef said the outcome demonstrates that the EU still struggles to win respect, while the country\u2019s confederation of small- and medium-sized enterprises said the deal will have<\/a> a \u201cdisastrous impact.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
