{"id":299074,"date":"2025-07-28T17:54:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T17:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/299074\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T17:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T17:54:09","slug":"thames-water-serious-pollution-incident-in-oxfordshire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/299074\/","title":{"rendered":"Thames Water: &#8216;Serious pollution incident&#8217; in Oxfordshire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Thames Water is investigating a discharge at its Wheatley Sewage Treatment Works site in south Oxfordshire.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Several tankers are now at the site helping to clean up the mess, which is said to be affecting the River Thames today (Monday, July 28).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A third party is said to have caused the discharge, according to Thames Water, and it is\u00a0understood wildlife could be affected.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Wheatley councillor Tim Bearder described the discharge as \u201ccategory one, the most serious\u201d and a \u201cchemical incident\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   alt=\"Tankers clear up\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Tankers clear up (Image: Tim Bearder)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordmail.co.uk\/news\/25345457.lidl-submits-plans-new-supermarket\/?rel=cl_mra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lidl submits plans for new supermarket<\/a><\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He added: \u201cTrucks are there and the treatment plant is closed while investigation work is carried out.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Liberal\u00a0Democrat Henley and Thame MP Freddie van Mierlo said he is \u201cextremely concerned\u201d by reports of a \u201cserious pollution incident\u201d affecting the river. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cWe don\u2019t yet know the full extent, but it\u2019s clear that something has gone badly wrong,\u201d he said.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;I&#8217;ve asked for urgent updates from Thames Water, and I\u2019m grateful for the swift response from local councillors and community members. \u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe River Thame is a vital part of our local environment, supporting wildlife.
