Tristan Schoolkate<\/a> captured his maiden win over a Top-50 opponent on Monday at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers<\/a> in Toronto, where he upset #NextGenATP star Joao Fonseca<\/a> 7-6(5), 6-4.<\/p>\n

In a first-round clash between two debutants at the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 event, qualifier Schoolkate overwhelmed Fonseca with controlled and consistent aggression behind his serve, dropping just four of 37 first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats. With his one-hour, 33-minute victory, the 24-year-old Australian is up four spots to a career-high No. 98 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very happy with the result today. I thought I played a good match and made it pretty tricky for Joao,\u201d said Schoolkate. \u201cHe\u2019s obviously a very established player, he\u2019s so young\u2026 Even when his age flashed on the board, I was like \u2018Here we go\u2019. I\u2019m just happy with the way I played, and looking forward to the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Fonseca was competing for the first time since his third-round run at Wimbledon<\/a>, Schoolkate arrived in Toronto fresh from reaching his first ATP Tour quarter-final in Los Cabos two weeks ago. He will next face Italy\u2019s Matteo Arnaldi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Schoolkate, who did not face a break point against Fonseca, used the quick conditions to his advantage, disrupting the Brazilian’s rhythm by consistently finding his spots on serve. After earning his second ATP Masters 1000 win, Schoolkate improved to a 5-5 tour-level record in 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not too many tournaments that are this fast,\u201d added Schoolkate. \u201cOur last tournament was Los Cabos, and that was very slow and bouncy. I think these conditions [in Toronto] suit the way I play. I serve big, try to get forward and make it a bit uncomfortable for the opponent, and I think that showed today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier, Jaume Munar<\/a> equalled his personal-best tally of 19 wins in a season (also 2022) by easing past Canadian qualifier Dan Martin<\/a> 6-3, 6-0. The Spaniard, who also notched 10 hard-court victories in one season for the first time, set a second-round meeting with 14th seed Francisco Cerundolo<\/a>, who leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 2-1.<\/p>\n

American Ethan Quinn<\/a> delivered an impressive debut performance in Toronto by winning 88 per cent (30\/34) of first-serve points, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to beat Yoshihito Nishioka<\/a> 7-6(1), 6-2. The 21-year-old set a rematch with Brandon Nakashima<\/a>, who won their second-round clash in Washington last week.<\/p>\n

Mackenzie McDonald<\/a> and lucky loser Dalibor Svrcina<\/a> were also among the winners on Monday lunchtime. McDonald moved past David Goffin<\/a> 6-4, 6-4, while Svrcina defeated Alexander Blockx<\/a> to tee up a second-round meeting with 10th seed Daniil Medvedev<\/a>.<\/p>\n
