trade deal &#8211; while Labour admits Brexit got UK better terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">European leaders have rounded on their \u2018badly negotiated\u2019 US trade deal which has left the bloc with worse terms than Britain \u2013 saying <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/donald_trump\/index.html\" id=\"mol-54b27700-6bb5-11f0-b4fa-8d924b36031b\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a> \u2018ate von der Leyen for breakfast\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It comes after the US president announced he had agreed \u2018the biggest deal ever made\u2019 between the US and the <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/european-union\/index.html\" id=\"mol-54dce260-6bb5-11f0-b4fa-8d924b36031b\" rel=\"noopener\">European Union<\/a> following a meeting with European Commission chief Ursuala von der Leyen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The agreement will subject the EU to 15per cent <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/tariffs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-54e03dc0-6bb5-11f0-b4fa-8d924b36031b\" rel=\"noopener\">tariffs<\/a> on most of its goods entering America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is lower than a 30per cent levy previously threatened by the US president &#8211; Furthermore lot of questions still open.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But\u00a0Ms von der Leyen said the deal was \u2018huge\u2019, adding: \u2018It will bring stability. It will bring predictability. I think we can make the best of that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Pressed on whether he would call it a Brexit benefit, he added: \u2018I\u2019m absolutely clear, I\u2019ve said in Parliament many times, this is a benefit of being out of the European Union, having our independent trade policy, absolutely no doubt about that.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When the UK and US signed a trade deal in June, it <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-8064401\/Boris-Johnson-says-drive-hard-bargain-trade.html\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced tariffs on car and aerospace imports to the US.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But agreement on a similar arrangement for Britain\u2019s steel imports was not reached, leaving tariffs on steel at 25per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">American concerns over steel products made elsewhere in the world, then finished in the UK, are said to be among the sticking points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Sir Keir Starmer is expected to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-13847405\/British-pm-starmer-harris-trump.html\" rel=\"noopener\">spend most of the day with President Trump on Monday, when he will have a chance to press the president on a steel deal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But Business Secretary Mr Reynolds suggested it may take more than a meeting between the two leaders to resolve the matter, telling BBC Breakfast: \u2018We were very happy to announce the breakthrough that we had a few months ago in relation to sectors like automotive, aerospace, which are really important to the UK economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018But we always said it was job saved, but it wasn\u2019t job done. There\u2019s more to do. The negotiations have been going on on a daily basis since then.
