{"id":299694,"date":"2025-07-28T23:21:16","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T23:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/299694\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T23:21:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T23:21:16","slug":"istanbul-airport-sets-european-record-for-daily-traffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/299694\/","title":{"rendered":"Istanbul Airport sets European record for daily traffic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IGA Istanbul Airport has announced a new European record for daily passengers \u2013 surpassing the previous mark set by London Heathrow.<\/p>\n<p>The Turkish airport said that 272,132 passengers had travelled through the airport on Sunday (27 July) &#8211; beating the existing daily record of 268,000 travellers at Heathrow on 30 June 2024.<\/p>\n<p>IGA Istanbul and Heathrow have been vying for the position of Europe\u2019s busiest airport in the past few years, with the UK airport just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnewseurope.com\/Air-Travel\/London-Heathrow-Airport-s-monthly-traffic-hit-by-power-outage\" ek-link=\"true\" title=\"maintaining top spot in 2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">maintaining top spot in 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, IGA Istanbul increased flight capacity by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstravelnewseurope.com\/Air-Travel\/Istanbul-Airport-launches-triple-runway-operations-to-boost-capacity\" ek-link=\"true\" title=\"introducing a new system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introducing a new system<\/a> allowing it to operate flights from three runways at the same time.
