The Business Secretary has said that he is \u201cabsolutely clear\u201d that the UK\u2019s 10% tariff rate as part of the trade deal with the US<\/a> is \u201ca benefit\u201d of Brexit<\/a>. Jonathan Reynolds<\/a> was speaking to Sky News after the EU struck a trade deal<\/a> with the US that will see European imports subject to a 15% tariff.<\/p>\n

Asked whether this was a direct benefit of Brexit<\/a>, Mr Reynolds said: \u201cAll of the trade negotiations that we\u2019ve got use the fact that we are not part of the customs union anymore, I\u2019m absolutely clear of that. I think we can make the best of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pushed again on whether he would call it a Brexit<\/a> benefit, Mr Reynolds later added: \u201cI\u2019m absolutely clear, I\u2019ve said in Parliament many time, this is a benefit of being out of the European Union<\/a>, having our independent trade policy, absolutely no doubt about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is \u201cmore to do\u201d on the UK-US trade deal, the Business Secretary said, as he indicated it may be unlikely there will be a \u201cresolution\u201d to the talks to announce after Sir Keir and Mr Trump meet.<\/p>\n

Speaking to BBC<\/a> Breakfast, Mr Reynolds said \u201cit\u2019s really important to have the president here\u201d and the visit offers \u201ca chance to do a bit of business\u201d.<\/p>\n

On the UK-US trade relationship, he added, \u201cWe were very happy to announce the breakthrough that we had a few months ago in relation to sectors like automotive, aerospace, which are really important to the UK economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we always said it was job saved, but it wasn\u2019t job done. There\u2019s more to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe negotiations have been going on on a daily basis since then. There\u2019s a few issues to push a little bit further today.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t perhaps have anything to announce a resolution of those talks, but there\u2019s some sectors that we still need to resolve, particularly around steel and aluminium, and there\u2019s the wider conversation about what the US calls its reciprocal tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Scotland\u2019s First Minister John Swinney has said he will press the US President to exempt Scotch whisky from US trade tariffs.<\/p>\n

Mr Swinney said the \u201cuniqueness\u201d of whisky made in Scotland justified the exemption from the 10% tariff applied on UK exports into the US.<\/p>\n
