{"id":300730,"date":"2025-07-29T08:31:32","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T08:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/300730\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T08:31:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T08:31:32","slug":"rare-first-edition-of-john-goulds-birds-in-tennants-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/300730\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare first edition of John Gould&#8217;s Birds in Tennants Auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The Birds of Great Britain by John Gould, a five-volume work published between 1862 and 1873, will be offered at Tennants Auctioneers&#8217; Books, Maps &amp; Manuscripts Sale in Leyburn on August 22.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The set features 367 hand-coloured lithographs and is celebrated for its scientific accuracy and artistic quality.<img   alt=\"John Gould, The Birds of Great Britain \u2013 Estimate: \u00a325,000-35,00\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>John Gould, The Birds of Great Britain \u2013 Estimate: \u00a325,000-35,000\u00a0(Image: Tennants)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The copy comes with provenance from Almeric Hugh Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough, as well as Birch Bernstein and HH Henley.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gould, who rose from humble beginnings as a gardener and taxidermist, became one of the most influential British ornithologists of the 19th century.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He published 41 folios with more than 3,000 illustrations, helping to shape ornithology and natural history illustration.<img   alt=\"Stafford Gaol Calendars of Prisoners \u2013 Estimate: \u00a33,000-5,000\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>Stafford Gaol Calendars of Prisoners \u2013 Estimate: \u00a33,000-5,000 (Image: Tennants)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Gould would study, describe, and sketch the birds, before his wife or later artists including Henry Constantine Richter, William Matthew Hart, and Edward Lear, completed the hand-coloured lithographs to his exacting standards.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The illustrations are known for being both artistically striking and scientifically detailed, often showing birds in naturalistic settings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Other rare works are also included in the upcoming auction.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A copy of John Miller\u2019s Illustratio Systematis Sexualis Linnaei, valued at \u00a38,000 to \u00a312,000, is among the lots.<img   alt=\"John Miller, An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus \u2013 Estimate: \u00a38,000-12,000\" style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>John Miller, An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus \u2013 Estimate: \u00a38,000-12,000 (Image: Tennants)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Published in parts between 1770 and 1777, the botanical volume features detailed illustrations of Carl Linnaeus\u2019 landmark classification system.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Miller, originally Johann Sebastian Mueller from Nuremberg, reportedly received praise from Linnaeus himself for the quality of his drawings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The book was once gifted to Ackworth School in Pontefract by Ellen Gurney.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Her father-in-law, Samuel Gurney, owned West Ham Park, which was previously home to a botanical garden created by Dr John Fothergill.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It was there that Miller gathered many of the specimens featured in his work.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The sale will also include a group of 42 17th-century calendars of prisoners from Stafford Gaol, estimated at \u00a33,000 to \u00a35,000.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The documents, dating from March 1661 to August 1688, detail prisoners and their charges.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Examples of entries include: &#8220;Elizabeth Woolley alias Bell of Elford in ye County of Stafford upon suspicion of having two husbands&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  and &#8220;William Bullorke?
