Instead, Cllr Richard Eddy said he was \u2018completely justified\u2019 in saying the leadership of Cotham School had \u2018behaved like terrorists\u2019 in a long-running dispute over a playing field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cotham School\u2019s leadership said the school was \u2018deeply concerned\u2019 at the &#8216;offensive&#8217; comments. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> and Green groups at City Hall had called on the long-standing Tory councillor for Bishopsworth to withdraw and apologise for the outspoken remarks, which he made during a council meeting yesterday afternoon (Monday, July 28) in a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/victory-bristol-school-stoke-lodge-10252955\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"discussion over the future of the Stoke Lodge playing fieldsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion over the future of the Stoke Lodge playing fields<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">During the meeting, after local residents had called on the council to take steps to stop Cotham School from erecting a fence around its playing fields at Stoke Lodge, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/outrage-bristol-tory-councillor-compares-10382864\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Cllr Eddy said: \u201cI\u2019ve got no confidence in the commitments or integrity of Cotham SchoolLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Cllr Eddy said: \u201cI\u2019ve got no confidence in the commitments or integrity of Cotham School<\/a> or its governors. Frankly, I prefer to trust the Hamas regime in Gaza, though arguably, they behave like terrorists do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Rejecting <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/outrage-bristol-tory-councillor-compares-10382864\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"calls to apologise and withdraw the remarksLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">calls to apologise and withdraw the remarks<\/a>, Cllr Eddy doubled down, telling Bristol Live he had no intention of apologising, and said he believed he was justified in making the comparison. \u201cI am disappointed &#8211; but not surprised &#8211; by the \u2018knee-jerk\u2019 reactions from Bristol\u2019s Labour and Green councillors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cEarlier this month, the Public Rights of Way &amp; Greens Committee voted unanimously to request that the Economy &amp; Skills Committee invoke Article 4- quashing Cotham School\u2019s right to use \u2018permitted development rights\u2019 to erect Berlin Wall-style fencing in its long-running war to deny Bristolians the liberty to use the land surrounding Stoke Lodge,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cFrankly, the actions of Cotham School and its board of governors is reprehensible and it is to the every-lasting disgrace of the former Labour Mayoral Administration (in which Cllr Tom Renhard served) that it abjectly failed to stand-up for Bristolians on what is council-owned land,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/0_Eddy.jpg\" alt=\"Cllr Richard Eddy says he would 'prefer to trust the Hamas regime in Gaza' to the leadership of Cotham School, adding 'though arguably they behave like terrorists do&quot;. Cllr Jenny Bartle, sitting next to him is visibly shocked(Image: Bristol City Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cAt the Economy &amp; Skills Committee on Monday, I was shocked that I was the only councillor to raise our Article 4 concerns and to demand that effective action be taken against Cotham School if it sought to take advantage of the time before our next scheduled meeting, when the Article 4 measure will be debated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI make no apology for the fact I take pride in not being like most modern \u2018plasticine politicians.\u2019 I say what I think, and do what I say,\u201d he said, adding that \u2018based on the appalling track record and duplicity of Cotham School\u2019s governors in this unedifying scandal\u2019 he was \u2018absolutely correct\u2019 to make the remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cllr Eddy also said he was \u2018completely justified\u2019 in saying in the council chamber that the school had \u2018behaved like terrorists\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Cotham School\u2019s leadership has been left shocked by the intervention, even after a long 13 years of a bruising and bitter dispute over the Stoke Lodge playing fields. We have a dedicated leadership and staff team of some 200 people, also from diverse backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe also have a strong group of governors. We have worked on the challenges of this long campaign to take over our fields with integrity and commitment. The comments Councillor Eddy made are offensive to us, and we ask him to apologise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe are proud to serve one of Bristol&#8217;s most diverse and vibrant school communities.
