A Liverpool radio station was found to be in breach of its licence after failing to pay an annual fee. Radio stations in the United Kingdom must pay a licence fee in order to broadcast and regulator Ofcom<\/a> manages these licences.<\/p>\n

Ofcom’s Broadcast and On Demand Bulletin, published yesterday (July 28), revealed that Liverpool Live Radio was among four licensees that have failed to pay their annual fees by the required date. In the case of the local station, this covered the period commencing February 28, 2025.<\/p>\n

As such, the station has been found to be in breach of licence conditions. The breach has been considered serious by Ofcom’s decision-maker and will therefore be considered for the imposition of a statutory sanction.<\/p>\n

The bulletin adds: “The sanctions decision maker will re-consider this during that process.”<\/p>\n

Regarding licences, the Ofcom<\/a> document states: “Ofcom is partly funded by the broadcast licence fees it charges television and radio licensees.<\/p>\n

“Ofcom<\/a> has a statutory obligation to ensure that the fees paid by licensees meet the cost of Ofcom\u2019s regulation of broadcasting.”<\/p>\n

It adds: “Failure by a licensee to pay its licence fee when required represents a significant and fundamental breach of a broadcast licence, as it means that Ofcom may be unable properly to carry out its regulatory duties.”<\/p>\n

Liverpool Live Radio launched in 2020<\/a> and is available on DAB across the North West and North Wales.<\/p>\n

The ECHO has attempted to reach the station for comment.<\/p>\n
