Scotland to review policies on transgender issues after Supreme Court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police Scotland has said it will review its policies on transgender issues following a Supreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/court\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Court;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Court<\/a> judgment on the legal definition of a woman.<\/p>\n<p>In September, Police Scotland reversed a policy which allowed rapists to identify as female and a review was announced, to be provided to the Scottish Police Authority (SPA).<\/p>\n<p>Following an SPA meeting in February, Police Scotland confirmed it was reviewing its Transitioning at Work policy based on self-identifying \u201cas part of our wider sex and gender review\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, the UK\u2019s highest court ruled the terms \u201cwoman\u201d and \u201csex\u201d in the Equality Act 2010 \u201crefer to a biological woman and biological sex\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court judgment prompted British <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/transport\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Transport;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Transport<\/a> Police (BTP) to introduce an \u201cinterim position\u201d on searching trans people.<\/p>\n<p>BTP said a day after the judgment that trans people held in custody will be strip searched by an officer in line with their birth sex.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a guidance<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This means trans women in custody will be searched by male officers, while officers who are trans women will no longer be able to search female detainees \u2013 although BTP stressed that someone can object and ask to be searched by another officer.<\/p>\n<p>The public confirmation of a policy change came as the Equality and Human Rights Commission said Wednesday\u2019s ruling means trans women cannot use single-sex female toilets or changing rooms or compete in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>Police Scotland said that its review would consider the Supreme Court judgment \u201cas well as revised national guidance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However it did not confirm whether an \u201cinterim position\u201d would be introduced.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant chief constable Catriona Paton said: \u201cOur ongoing review is considering the terminology and recording practices we use to collect and record sex and gender data and recommend improvements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis important work will consider today\u2019s Supreme Court judgment as well as revised national guidance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also reviewing our guidance, policies and procedures within our organisation, to ensure that they are aligned to our values, comply with equality, human rights and data protection laws and meet our operational requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to engage with a range of
