{"id":302117,"date":"2025-07-29T20:35:06","date_gmt":"2025-07-29T20:35:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/302117\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T20:35:06","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T20:35:06","slug":"former-senior-police-officer-selected-to-fill-uup-assembly-seat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/302117\/","title":{"rendered":"Former senior police officer selected to fill UUP Assembly seat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/morningHeadlines1_1.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Morning Headlines\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Get the free Morning Headlines email for news from our reporters across the worldSign up to our free Morning Headlines emailSign up to our free Morning Headlines email<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/morningHeadlines1_1.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Morning Headlines\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A former senior police officer has been selected to fill an Ulster Unionist Party Assembly seat in North Antrim.<\/p>\n<p>Jon Burrows was selected after an internal party process on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Former North Antrim MLA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/colin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colin<\/a> Crawford resigned earlier this year after less than a year in the role.<\/p>\n<p>The seat was previously occupied by former health minister Robin Swann, who left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/stormont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stormont<\/a> last year following his election as MP for South Antrim.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood that two other candidates were interviewed.<\/p>\n<p>During his career of more than 20 years with the Police Service of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/northern-ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Ireland<\/a>, Mr Burrows was Foyle area commander and a chief inspector.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on the social media network X, Mr Burrows said it \u201cwill be the honour of a lifetime to serve the people of North Antrim as their next MLA; I won\u2019t let them down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to being in Stormont and providing that scrutiny that we need to ensure that Northern Ireland gets the absolute best governance possible so it is the best place possible that we can live, socialise, work, raise a family and start a business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext week, I\u2019ll be signing in at Stormont and I\u2019ll be up in North Antrim to meet the constituents and get started at work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in a statement, the Ulster Unionist Party said: \u201cAfter a rigorous internal selection process with independent oversight, we can now confirm that Jon Burrows has been selected to fill the vacancy of North Antrim MLA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would like to thank Colin Crawford for his dedicated service to the Assembly over the last year and wish him well with future endeavours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the North Antrim UUP Association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/brian-thompson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Thompson<\/a> welcomed the selection of Mr Borrows, saying he was an \u201cexceptional individual\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to start by thanking Colin for all of his efforts over the last year and wish him well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also want to thank all those who put their name forward and took part in the selection process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are delighted to have Jon on board.
