Manchester United<\/a> have expressed interest in signing Newcastle United<\/a> goalkeeper Nick Pope<\/a> to challenge current Old Trafford<\/a> No. 1 Andre Onana.<\/p>\n The Red Devils have not ruled out bringing a new goalkeeper to the club this summer to compete with Onana.<\/p>\n Onana was rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world prior to his \u00a343m move from Inter Milan in 2023<\/a> but the ex-Champions League finalist has flattered to deceive at United.<\/p>\n The 29-year-old made a number of high-profile mistakes during United\u2019s dismal 2024-25 campaign and was left out of some squads towards the end of the season<\/a>.<\/p>\n Already questioning Onana\u2019s future at the club, the Manchester United hierarchy discovered the Cameroon international would not play on the club\u2019s pre-season tour after he suffered a hamstring injury in training<\/a>.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tGet personalised updates on Manchester United every day\t\t\t<\/p>\n Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro\u2019s Football Newsletter. <\/p>\n Sign up to our newsletter<\/a> and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. <\/p>\n Onana travelled to the States for the three-game Premier League Summer Series but is spending his time recovering ahead of the new season.<\/p>\n Manchester United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers since Onana\u2019s injury blow and talkSPORT<\/a> say England international Pope is the latest to be considered.<\/p>\n \t\t Pope has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League for the best part of a decade, making almost 100 appearances for Newcastle since his \u00a310m move from Burnley.<\/p>\n The 33-year-old was injured for four months last season and Newcastle\u2019s own interest in goalkeepers this summer has raised speculation over his future at St James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n Carabao Cup holders Newcastle have been heavily linked with fellow England shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale<\/a>, who wants to leave Southampton following their relegation to the Championship.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tWhat Nemanja Matic said about Andre Onana\t\t\t<\/p>\n Ahead of facing his former club last season, Nemanja Matic labelled Andre Onana as \u2018one of the worst goalkeepers in the club\u2019s history\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n Onana had earlier claimed Manchester United were \u2018way better\u2019 than Matic\u2019s Lyon, who they ended up beating on their way to the Europa League final.<\/p>\n Matic, who played for United from 2017-2022, said: \u2018You know, I respect everyone but to say that then you need to give the answer.<\/p>\n \u2018If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United\u2019s history, you need to take care what you\u2019re talking about.<\/p>\n \u2018If it was [Edwin] Van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel or [David] De Gea saying that, then I would question myself. But you need to have cover to say something like that.\u2019<\/p>\n Ramsdale\u2019s potential move to Newcastle would only increase speculation Pope will be sold as he enters the final 12 months of his contract at the Champions League club.<\/p>\n Leeds United reportedly looked into the possibly of signing Pope earlier in the summer but Newcastle held firm and the Lilywhites have since signed Lucas Perri from Lyon for around \u00a315m.<\/p>\n While Newcastle are in talks with Southampton over a deal for Ramsdale, Sky Sports<\/a> say the club have indicated they are not currently planning to sell Pope.<\/p>\n \t\t Eddie Howe, planning for Newcastle\u2019s return to the Champions League<\/a>, is keen to bring Ramsdale in but wants a new goalkeeper to challenge Pope rather than replace him.<\/p>\n \u2018Nick Pope has performed admirably for them over the course of the last few seasons but unfortunately he\u2019s had a number of injuries,\u2019 Sky Sports\u2019 James Savundra said.<\/p>\n \u2018Our understanding is Eddie Howe wants a goalkeeper to compete with Pope rather than replace Pope.<\/p>\n \u2018You could have two England goalkeepers competing for the No. 1 jersey at Newcastle, knowing whoever gets it will have a great chance of going to the World Cup next summer.\u2019<\/p>\n In the injured Onana\u2019s absence, Altay Bayindir is Ruben Amorim\u2019s No. 1 during Manchester United\u2019s pre-season tour, but he too has been linked with an Old Trafford exit.<\/p>\n United have shown interest in Emiliano Martinez<\/a> but Aston Villa want at least \u00a340m for the World Cup winner \u2013 a price the Red Devils are reluctant to meet.<\/p>\n Manchester United have already spent over \u00a3120m on attacking duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.<\/p>\n Their pursuit of a goalkeeper is seen as less important than bringing in a new striker \u2013 Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins are being considered<\/a> after Viktor Gyokeres rejected them in favour of joining Arsenal.<\/p>\n For more stories like this,\u00a0check our sport page<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on \t\t\tComments Arrow Arrow Arrow \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t![\"Manchester](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/GettyImages-2227012634.jpg\")
