{"id":302945,"date":"2025-07-30T04:06:19","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T04:06:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/302945\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T04:06:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T04:06:19","slug":"sumitomo-drive-technologies-usa-partners-with-swisslog-to-modernize-virginia-headquarters-operation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/302945\/","title":{"rendered":"Sumitomo Drive Technologies USA partners with Swisslog to modernize Virginia headquarters operation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swisslog, a leading provider of warehouse automation and software, today announced that Sumitomo Drive Technologies USA will deploy an advanced AutoStore\u00a0solution integrated with autonomous forklifts, orchestrated by Swisslog\u2019s SynQ software.<\/p>\n<p>Sumitomo Drive Technologies, a brand of Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America (SMA), manufactures power transmission and control products for a variety of applications serving customers in food and beverage, parcel handling, automotive, and mining.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new automation solution will be installed in Sumitomo Drive Technologies USA headquarters facility in Chesapeake, Va. as part of the company\u2019s efforts to modernize both its warehouse and assembly operations. Once operational, the system will include AutoStore (14 robots and 22,872 bins) for small parts storage and 11 autonomous forklifts for handling heavier components. At the core of the system, Swisslog\u2019s powerful\u00a0SynQ intralogistics software platform\u00a0will manage all of the logistics processes, including receiving and storage, enabling just-in-time delivery and kitting for assembly lines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis deployment represents best practice for the durable goods manufacturing sector. By consolidating parts and streamlining workflows, the system will reduce warehouse space requirements\u2014helping Sumitomo avoid the cost and complexity of a facility expansion,\u201d said Mike Barker, president and CEO of Swisslog Americas. \u201cThe project not only reflects Swisslog\u2019s ability to deliver smart automation, but also highlights the strength of our team\u2019s collaboration with Sumitomo\u2014built on a deep understanding of their business and a shared commitment to advancing their automation journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In May, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vedp.org\/press-release\/2025-05\/sumitomo-chesapeake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced <\/a>that Sumitomo Drive Technologies will invest $9.3 million in the Chesapeake modernization, with the planned Autostore system able to consolidate 27,000 square feet of inventory into 7,000 square feet of space.<\/p>\n<p>Through its SynQ software and deployment expertise, Swisslog helps companies like Sumitomo Drive Technologies improve performance from their AutoStore systems.
