An inquest has opened after the death of a Welsh man who died on holiday in Malta. Kieran Thomas Hughes was on holiday in the St Julian’s area of the Mediterranean island, it was said at in inquest held in Caernarfon this morning (July 30).<\/p>\n
It was reported previously that the 25-year-old died after falling from a hotel balcony, however Sarah Riley, assistant coroner for north west Wales, told the hearing that the full circumstances surrounding his death “are not yet available”.<\/p>\n
However, she said Mr Hughes, a software engineer from Caernarfon, died at Triq Spinola on the Mediterranean island on July 11, 2025.<\/p>\n
The Maltese authorities provided the cause of death to Riley as “multiple blunt force injuries due to a fall from height”.<\/p>\n
She also said that it is “more likely than not to be an unnatural death”.<\/p>\n
She said this cause is sufficient for her to hold an inquest which she opened and adjourned pending completion of further investigations.<\/p>\n
It has been reported that medics were called to the scene in the town’s Triq Spinola area at around 4.15am.<\/p>\n
It is understood Mr Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the Foreign Office has previously confirmed they were in contact with local authorities.<\/p>\n
Police inquiries are reported to be ongoing.<\/p>\n
Liz Saville Roberts, MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd described Mr Thomas’ death, at the time, as “heartbreaking news”.<\/p>\n
“My heart goes out to the young man’s family at this extremely difficult time,” she added.<\/p>\n
Senedd member Sian Gwenllian said it was “truly devastating”. “The pain his family must be experiencing is unimaginable,” she said.<\/p>\n
